Now that I think about it, if you are calling your teachers that, it is probably in the obvious context and you're designating them an "old-timer".

Sempai is acknowledging someone is your senior. This even applies to someone in your peer group (or otherwise a contemporary) and they happen to be older than you. (not that I care of technicality as of right now)

actually i was thinking like the teacher hearing a word they've probably never heard before and mistaking it as an insult when it would actually be a form of respect.Sentient Satire wrote:Sempai is acknowledging someone is your senior. I actually did get it. And although my outwardly dour nature has been known to party-poop a few jokes here and there, this isn't one of those instances. Amazingly, it is also used in the semi-disrespectful way I pointed out. Sorry, I always come across as too serious and crossing the punch-line when it was for all intents and purposes, independent of that.Bulghod wrote:...mistaking it as an insult when it would actually be a form of respect.

quote="Off-topic-ness"]AMVfreak seems to be moonlighting as an FFVII freak as of late...
/rant[/quote]Actually, the a popular explaination of the etymology of "otaku" is the progression of using the term for house to label people recluses, and socially inept. Originally used to designate photography students... the negative nature of it expanded to include the stereotypical anime hobbyists, among others. English users seem to use it exclusively in regard to anime. Yes, I know, that explaination was probably not welcome. Back to posting lame anime jokes...
