I've two choices and that's the way it shall be...
Katsuhiro Otomo ~ Still watch Akira and Memories.
His style of storytelling is very distinctive and I love it so.
Hayao Miyazaki ~ Kiki's Delivery Service is still one of my favorite movies and so is Spirited Away.
His "piece of life" and "coming of age" anime are excellent.
These two directors deserve praise like no other...

Because Ghibli was a phenominal series for me to watch.
Absolutely amazing, in my opinion.
Although its a shame that hes getting to his age,
I hope to see more out of him.

Ehhhh....
I guess I'll take....
Shinichiro Watanabe-He's visual style and tone are awesome. His action squences are like no other.
First place loser is Hayao Miyakzi. He bring his story full of life and color and his visual style is very poetic.
3rd would go to Oshii but I like is screenwritting better.

I'll take one of the directors that doesn't appear on this list.
Satoshi Kon (Perfect Blue, Millenium Actress, etc.) Everytime I've seen one of his movies I'm just blown away by the visual style he presents along with amazing scripts and characters (I haven't seen Paranoia Agent yet, but I greatly wish to).
But seriously, I like all of the directors from that list, and wouldn't place one director above the other(Satoshi Kon included). They all have unique and enjoyable styles and do an amazing job of bringing their visions to life.

I'm just surprised that under Hayao Miyakzi you didn't put Nausicaä of the Valley of Wind. I mean that is his master piece and that's basically The Legend of anime. I think between that, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and Castle of Cagliostro he has solidified himself as #1.
Also Anno directed His and Her Circumstances and Nadia - Secret of Blue Water, you've got to mention those two;)

Forgot about Satoshi Kon till you mentioned him, actually.
Hmm, come to think, I really can't compare their styles against each other at this moment.
When I think even harder, I really cant choose which of the directors listed above are my favorite, as they're all great.
Lets just say Im in a Ghibli-ic mood right now.
