AMV: Just effects?

I definitely enjoy effects if they're used well. When theres a bunch thrown in just for the sake of being there I can't stand them though.

And yes I've seen some great videos with nothing besides crossfades.

I'd have to say it depends on the subject of the video. I've seen very few effect-driven vids that I liked. The ones I did like, I liked because those effects were combined with characters/stories that I enjoyed seeing in such a flashy, in-your-face manner. Others end up being eyecandy aimed at someone that's not me = aka, I don't find myself in the target audience so my dislike doesn't reflect on the video so much as on me.

As for my own videos, I can't do effects. Oh, I can *do* a lot with frame-by-frame editing, but I can't make it 'effective' in a video for the general public. So far every single video I've made that didn't use effects, has received reviews saying it would have been great if it had used effects. And every single video I've used that incorporated an effect has received at least one review saying it would have been great without the effects. What does that tell me? I'm incapable of pleasing the general public when it comes to effects or a lack of effects. Some videos I've made depended on the effects, so I put them in. Others would have looked far too blatant and just...gaudy with effects added in.

I use effects on a 'need-to-use' basis. If I think the song or story necessitates some addition to the footage itself, I'll add that. If I think the video is best presented using the anime itself, that's how I present it. For most vids I find effects aren't needed, so I simply don't do them.

I'm the sort who doesn't add salt to my food because I want to taste it without the masking artificial flavor. I think of effects the same way. Unless it's a bland tasting video, it doesn't need the spices mixed in to the point where they're all you can taste. If the point of the video is to have a dose of sugar with substance hidden beneath so your belly gets full, add a bit of anime footage to the effects and have at it.

/This doesn't include crossover vids that are only possible with 'effects' to 'create' the scenes used. This is directed towards the additive effects, not the inherent ones.

perfect. i'm starting to find out what people like and dislike about editing. and now that someone mentioned the Euphoria video, i saw it and i think the effects in that vid were awesome. i just wish i wasnt too damn lazy to make my AMVs such as that one.

You don't need effects to make a great video. One of my favorite videos of all time is The Pain of Ryoko's Heart. That has no effects but it moved me so much that I started making amvs. I will not deny that I am an eye candy junkie too but eye candy with no story will only be so entertaining unless it's something REALLY special. I know when I edit I don't really check off effects cause I'm not really doing stuff like the eye candy videos. It's only recently that I am using AE and I am doing that mainly because the footage looks cleaner than doing it in premiere and photoshop alone. Cuts and fades can get the best marks sometimes for an amv. (I can actually see that cause the videos with the least "effects" I have done has some of the highest watch and throw a good star at it.) Don't deny simple and to the point cause it can be effective.

i dont use effects, its not that i cant, its just i like the old style of simplicity.

Oddly enough, I'm in the middle party...kind of a love-hate relationship with effects...on one hand, I admit I loved Shameless Rock Video...on the other...while I admit it looked nice, I as otherwise unwowed by Euphoria...in turn, I've found several 'simply' made videos to be surprisingly pretty impressive (Mitternacht, Macross-One Day More!, and a few of Vlad Ponhert's titles)

As for myself...I don't use all that much advanced beyond lip-sync, dissolves, and maybe some frame tweaking...I dunno, I just never saw that much of a need with my vids to really go nuts with the effects and doesn't look like I'll have any burning need to learn them in the future (...closest I stand to get to an effects vid at this rate is the upcoming 'Tokyo-3 Radio'...and frankly, with all the technical set-backs I've been having, that could be a while)

I hardly ever use effects in my videos beyond simple transitions. For the most part, I don't see the need.
