( i could be way off here)
i think realtime has something to do with the fact that you don't have to render to see it as its supposed to be.
or my stupid guess will be realtime as in what live tv shows do where its all done "in real time
" where when we make an AMV we can stop the source, play it back rewind it and what not.
(again these are just what i've derived with either some form of common sense and or have heard it said before this is by no means concrete fact.)

I suspect you guys have it pretty much right on. In the CG world, each image (each frame that is) must be rendered. If it is "real time" that means that the frames are rendered fast enough to display the video _while_ it is being rendered. (Or in other words, each frame is rendered while the previous frame is being displayed.)
So I imagine in the video editing world it's the same. Editing in "real time" means each frame of the output video can be rendered while the previous frame is being displayed. The effect: you can watch your output without preredering it as a seperate step. (Note "prerendering" because technically it's still being "rendered", but it is rendered _while_ you watch it.)
If you think about it though, the other comment - that it is when you edit a live video feed - is not incorrect either. If you're editing a live video feed, you can't prerender it, so the rendering must occur in "real time" hence the term "real time editing" is applicable here as well.
That's my exceedingly technical explaination.
So in other words, everyone is right.
