I own the 1st RahXephon DVD and the whole 2nd episode has subtitles that are out of time :¬ \
I'm bored and you're dumb. A match made in heaven.

I agree that the subs can be taxing at times, but:

A) They beat the hell out of hearing Asuka sound like a REDNECK....

B) At least we GOT Azumanga. When I was watching the fansubs a while back I was convinced that one was never making it over here. I just about shit when I heard that it got licenced.

C) Could have been 4Kids......

Could have been worse, actually. Ever try to watch the ADV release of Shin Getter Armegeddon?

Not only are the names almost always incorrect in the subtitles, but the DUB is EXACTLY the same as the subtitles, bad translations, typos and all.

I dunno...at least the sub for that one managed to keep Getters II and III in order (the dub constantly managed to fuck those two up)

That doesn't even make any sense... She should have a _German_ accent, if any...

I assume you're talking about "Osaka" from Azumanga Daioh. She's from Osaka where they have a different accent of Japanese. It's basically the equivalent of a southern accent in America so what they did was pretty much correct. How do you translate an Osakan accent into English anyways?
I don't watch subbed stuff that often, but I've noticed the same thing as everyone else. It's only when you've seen a really crappy fan sub when you change your mind. I watched a fan sub of the Ninja Scroll TV series and it was horrid! It was like a 100% literal translation. Almost as bad as "All your base are belong to us".
Funny how things lose quality when you have to pay for them.

Zarxrax wrote:This past weekend I purchased Azumanga Daioh volume 2 released by ADV films. Upon watching it, I noticed that they had a nasty typo in the subtitle stream. When Koroin's mom is trying to wake Kaorin up, she is supposed to say something along the lines of "What kind of dream is this girl having?" But instead, the subtitle read "Want kind of..." Such a glaringly obvious mistake such as this is simply unforgivable by me. If this were the first time, I would just shrug it off, but for YEARS I have been purchasing titles with horrible subtitling jobs from ADV. This was the last time though, and I have decided that I will never again purchase a DVD from ADV films. The fact that they (continually) make mistakes such as this tells me one thing as a consumer: they do not care about me or other fans of the series, as long as we fill their pockets with our cash every month. I have written to ADV telling them my feelings, and I would encourage anyone who feels similarly to do so as well. If they get enough complaints, perhaps they will actually hire someone to do quality checking. I mean come on... HOW HARD IS IT TO SPEND 25 MINUTES CHECKING OVER AN EPISODE?

It is not just ADV that screws over the subtitle watcher, but many companies. Though I have singled out ADV here, they are not the worst. If you notice any anime company releasing a sub-par subtitle stream on their DVDs, I highly encourage you to let them know your thoughts on the matter.

I am paying a LOT of money for anime DVDs, so is it that wrong that I should expect a subbing job thats at least as good as most fansubs?

You do what ADV Manga did for the AD manga (and what Viz did for the NGE manga) and make it a Brooklyn accent.
I've never heard it actually done, but it just HAS to sound better. Not to mention fitting the personality of the stereotypical Osaka-jin better (from what I've been able to gather).

Or, in Osaka's case, since she isn't your stereotypical Osaka-jin, make her (as Kai Stromler put it) a "Jersey girl".

I would've found that more annoying. I think her southern accents fits her as she is kind of scatterbrained. ;)

At least it isn't as bad as the accents in Magical Shopping Arcade Abenabashi. Those made me cringe. I usually can at least tolerate dubs, but that made me cringe.
