About the only other solution is analog capture, and that's going to cost you more than $20. Which is pretty cheap, BTW. I spent $70 on a Firewire card, although that was two years ago.
You could buy a new PC, one that has IEEE1394 built-in.
A converter from IEEE1394 to USB2 would almost certainly cost more than $20. But they don't exist...see this forum post:

I think I read everything, but some times I'm lazy.
You can not get USB to Firewire because Bill is Evil and Steve thinks Bill is evil.
Other than that a firewire card at best buy was 15 bucks. It may have been a one slot, I can't remember. I did get a firewire port for freind A's iPod in freind B's computer. I did all of the iTunes setup and gave him all my music. So check best buy for something. They usualy keep them behind the counter, so ask.

and one more thing^^madmag9999 wrote:if uv never put a card in your system i suggest u follow a few simple steps:
1. turn off the system![]()
2. uplug it from the power befor doing anything
3. slide the card in firmly but not so hard as to break it
4. if its an agp card or ram make sure to open the latches befor instalataion and close them after
5. screw the card in
6. make sure u didnt drop anything anywhere in the system
7. plug it back in
8. power it on
touch ur metalic house plumbing a few times b4 touching any component in order to discharge any staic electricity and also leave the power cable plugged in the chassi in order for it to act as a sort of ground...
getting naked also helps too...but then ur not as precautious as me i guess^^(i put together my comp with my pinkies....)

also...no firewire to USB 2.0 adapter exists because of the way they transfer data...very different architectures...
also USB goes to a speed of around 480 kbps...and has a smaller buffer than firewire...running on average at 400kbps
result? too much information to be stored for transfer by the DV cam in one shot...a shame the speed doesnt compensate for this...
and no Steve and Bill dont hate each other...
Steve hates IBM Dell and other hardware suppliers^^
microsoft office for mac very much does exist u know...with a nice glowing yellow logo too...
of course Bill hates Linus Torvalds...now can u guess wat he did that sly little russian man now?^^
