In all manner of entertainment my opinion is thus:

Rape=bad. I cannot think of a single time that I found it entertaining, regardless of whether or not a character was evil. I think the closest think would be the south park movie where saddam gets the pineaple. Even then, not much.

Yaoi = not my thing, but I avoid it like the above, so I'm not what you would call overly exposed. (links are not neccesary thank you) About the only thing in that realm that seemed entertaining was 'maybe' Yukikaze, but that's just because I like military stuff.

Yuri = good. Yes, I'm hypocritical and double standardized and alll that. I'm not talking anime porn here, more like uh.,.. Karumi type stuff.

Nice that you found a form of entertainment that works for you. By the vast amounts of it out there I'm sure that you are not alone. I've seen Bible Black, A Kite, and Urotsukidoji, I was told that they were strong on story, so I figured I'd see what the deal was. While they did in fact have a discernable story, I was spending a lot of time on the fast forward key. Your points about personal investment into characters makes sense, but if that's the case then wouldn't that just make the 'story' driven hentai much more reprehensible? I mean, that is the equivalent of watching say... Sakaki from Azumanga Daioh get kidnapped and raped. Personally I'll just have to chalk it up to divergent tastes in entertainment.

Normal anime has many of the same elements of hentai just glossed over. When there is no tension or worry that a character is in trouble in some way, most shows lose a lot of luster. Take GTO for example, when that girl was kidnapped, there was a definate sense of drama. Wondering how (if) she was going to be saved was a high point in the episode. So I 'get' the concept there, but when it crosses some invisible line and becomes watching someone get hurt, abused or 'forced', it stops being entertaining. Your description says that for the (I'm generalizing here forgive me) true hentai fan, this is when the STARTS getting entertaining.

Saying that hentai makes anime look bad is like saying that porno makes live action look bad and that porn comics makes the comic industry look bad. I'm sorry but anime is a form of entertainment and like all others their are going to be different varieties. If someone is ignorant enough to think that all anime is the spawn of the devil because they know that hentai exists, then they are the ones who need to be shot if anyone. I don't think he ment all real girls look icky and he only likes anime girls. I think he was referring to the fact that most women in porno are damn ugly.
