I'm finally done - New Berserk AMV

Post by Sir_Lagsalot » Tue Apr 06, 2004 2:25 am

My second video is done, and it is a huge step up from my first video (not that my first was bad, it has a 3.3 star rating and I am satisfied with that). My main goal was to create a very interesting video with many original digital effects, and I feel I succeeded at this very well. Please check it out, and feel free to leave an opinion: http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... hp?v=35844

Wow, I know this is a semi-necropost, but I still feel like this vid needs more attention. It's definately one of the better Berserk works I've seen. However, I definately think you went a bit overboard on the transitions, in fact, my favorite parts of the video were all where you WEREN'T relying on digital effects for sync. But still, overall, twas a fine work.

"my favorite parts of the video were all where you WEREN'T relying on digital effects for sync" Just my luck, I make a video to play with spiffy digital effects, and they like the parts without them  You might want to check out my first video though, since its similar in style but uses almost no effects.
Oh, and I completely agree this video needs more attention :D

*Warning* May need to be played in DivX Player to get proper timing *Warning*

(That's what happened to me anyway). Well, it was a good video and I enjoyed the majority of the digital effects. Definitely was one of the better timing Beserk videos.

Forgot to add, this song freaking RAWKS

But yeah, I'm a huge Berserk fan, and generally I look for a nice mix of action AND drama in Berserk vids. In this one, I could see some clever and subtle lyrical syncing, especially towards the begining, but then it felt like you just started throwing in unneccessary stuff just for the sake of eye candy. Now, this isn't a real problem per se, it's just my own personal beef with the vid. Still, nice work, I look foreward to checking out your first vid and seeing more from you in the future.

Good stuff:

-The way you manipulated with Brightness & Contrast and Hue & Saturation in dark parts of the show.
-Your final filter manipulation through Virtual Dub (makes the quality look awesome)
-Effects: 0:28(nothing but luv for that), gradient at 0:32 (fits), zoom at 0:39, 0:50 (like the way of timing it), 1:07 (kewl idea), 1:56-58 (very nice move), 2:12 (neat idea), 2:44-2:46 (like the colour change :P), 3:22-24 (extreme kewlness)
-It gives out the feel of a Grifith video, which is a plus.
-The song and clip choice  (refrain sux but no biggy)

Sucky stuff:

-Effects: Grain at 1:05 (wrong options used), 1:09-1:11 (tze tze, waves?),
1:20-26 (might I say that it was extremely original, but very unfitting. Those kinds of multi sharp screens don't do well in Berserk), 1:49-51 (fits but inproper options included in it. Might have maybe experimented with more stuff), 2:07-2:09 (meh...) , 2:46- 50 (same as the first multi screen effect)
-Large speeding up (I think some were even over 200%) in the beggining and end which isn't gewd.
-Lazyness in some parts. I mean, you put a lot of effort of course, but somewhere where you HAD to fade you didn't. Tze tze...
-Only a fan of the show knows how to enjoy it

Overally: twas neat. I'm also making a Berserk video with many innovative effects and new ways of using other programs in editing. Want to completely express myself through it :P . I like some of the effect ideas . Very fresh and new but few were a bit over the top  . But still...

/me likes :P

Op. might be submited if you don't mind an 8 in Effects & Review :? .

SSJVegita0609:
I'm assuming that you are talking about the sections without lyrics and frequent transitions: I didn't throw in stuff intending to simply give the video eye candy; there simply no lyrics to guide the video, the music called for lots of action, and the music also followed a regular pattern which to me suggested the "beat beat, scene, transition" format that I went with. I actual ended up cutting out sections of the music because I felt these scenes really added little to the video, but cutting them too much would have noticeably distorted the song. So in the end, I was stuck with what is essentially filler (despite being well timed and eye-candy). I really worked to avoid skimping on the video simply to have more effects.

bote:
"Your final filter manipulation through Virtual Dub (makes the quality look awesome)" Actually the only post-processing filter used was Resize. I did all my filtering on a case by case basis as I got the clips from the vob files, which allows for much greater control over the appearance and quality, leading to increased awesomeness :D

"0:50 (like the way of timing it)" Really liked that one too, while somewhat simple, the effect, the video and the music just worked very well together.

"3:22-24 (extreme kewlness)" Interesting, I would say that effect didn't fit as well as the mosaic effect, and was actualy one of the effects I considered changing.

"1:20-26 (might I say that it was extremely original, but very unfitting. Those kinds of multi sharp screens don't do well in Berserk)" I really enjoyed this effect and though it fit the lyrics, "I've come to realize with every little glimpse, you fade" as it is showing all sorts of scenes from Gatt's life leading up to his decision to leave Griffith and the Hawks.

"1:09-1:11 (tze tze, waves?)" Music - quiet... LOUD! Me - Hmm, needs to be suddenly distorted violently. The rotation of the sections is based off of the audio waveform too :D (most of the wave-like distortion effects use the waveform as well)

"Large speeding up (I think some were even over 200%)" Beat syncing :? Tried to minimize the notice-ability as much as possible.

"Lazyness in some parts. I mean, you put a lot of effort of course, but somewhere where you HAD to fade you didn't." Not fading is being lazy?

Personally, I thought the mosiac effect was badass. My main beef was with the wiping transitions, they just hurt the flow of the video and seemed so... unneccessary? I think simple crossfades would've had a much better effect. I actually liked most of the effects outside of transitions, except for the ripples.

My favorite use of effects has to be at 0:49, well done there.

 I totally forgot that I can do all the filtering via avisynth. *goes and adds some*

Tis for me :P. You might not have seen it pictured that way maybe. If it's like that then it's ok.
