Same ol videos!

Post by Korrosive » Tue Feb 24, 2004 10:48 am

Come on people!!! Enough is enough! I use to search the top Star Scale videos every Monday religiously to see what great videos were put out for the week. However, I haven't done so in 4 weeks because of the over use and over done videos littering the top 100 video listing. Today was the first in those four weeks and I have seen things have clearly not changed. People with no imagination and limited resources are driving me mad with their compulsive overuse of scenes from InyuYasha, Ya Ya Hakusho, Kenshin(Samurai X), and of course the biggest stink in Anime, DBZ. These aren't even note-worthy videos either... just some armature crap that the self-proclaimed-artist threw together. They suck! They lack ingenuity and originality. Get with it people! Enough of the same ol videos! Try your hand at something different or find some footage better than those previously listed animes that most of you get by recording Cartoon Network and then are too lazy to edit out the logo in the right corner. I understand there is a "first AMV for everyone", but it's not mentioned that your first AMV has to be one of DBZ. Go get some good, high quality anime and use that!

Awcomeon. This is like the... 56th topic in the last week about this.

Personally, I don't trust star ratings too much - I keep seeing videos with like 4 or 5 good ratings and I don't believe that's a neccesarily accurate reflection of quality.

But don't give me that 'there's no good videos coming out' thing! There's more good videos than you can shake a stick at around here! Some ways to find them that are better than 'latest downloads'/'top star scale'

1) See the top 10% list. I haven't regretted getting a single video off there.

2) Search for anime titles which you don't think are overdone. Again, this often comes up with a few decent choices.

3) Look at resectable creators' top lists. They often contain solid recommendations.

And, don't complain... this is like complaining against pop music. So, there's a lot of it? Well, that doesn't matter as long as there's good stuff coming out otherwise.

Lastly, not every Naruto/DBZ/Eva video is crap

the biggest stink in Anime, DBZ
That "stink" what you call it is the most popular and most watched anime of all times by every single poll or statiscic I've seen. Only Eva is somewhere close to it, since it ruled Japan for years, but still N.America and Europe made DBZ even more popular. If it hadn't been for DBZ anime would have never broken through America. Sure, there were animes before DBZ that were aired in America and as far as I know Slayers was the first one that was actually shown on TV. Did you know that? Of course you didn't. 'Cause it wasn't popular.

Now, listen to me! Don't bitch about DBZ videos just 'cause you run into "some" crappy looking ones. I try so hard to make something good of DBZ in order to change such opinions, but noooooo...

Oh please! And what good it'll do to them if they don't know anything about videos ?! They have to practice first for God's sake. No one became a pro over night. You think all those good creators were always good and non-mistakeable? Every single one of them had shitty looking stuff in their career. But, they didn't want to make it public, so they kept it for themselves.

Does it mean that if you see any entry with Hellsing, Berserk, VHD etc. that it's necessarely gonna be better than some unknown DBZ one:evil: ? You don't even appreciate the effort, no matter how small it is that each of the creators make. Oh, I forgot, you haven't made any. Then why are you questioning somebody elses work? No matter how crappy the video looks it still needs time to be done. Sure, some don't bother paying more attention, but afterall they're having fun making it. I thought that's the whole point, or I didn't approach AMV making right :? ?

I dunno why do you even bother dlding DBZ or Eva or Kenshin if some things about them you're gonna despise right in start. :?

I should clarify though, that the reason I came to the .org in the first place and registred on the forums and started posting is a very similar thing to what our initial poster here is frustrated with.

I was piping mad that virtually every one of my favorite music artists was not represented at all in the database, and I was ready to spit fire at every 'accursed' DBZ video in sight because I witnessed patterns in them going over and over and over... with no creativity in sight.

Of course, about a week into my invasion, I was rudely awakened by a set of excellent videos, both old and brand new, to the fact that I was goddamn freakin wrong and in another week, I admitted defeat and started on contemplating becoming an editor myself, inspired by the good stuff I saw.

This Otohiko has learned the tricks of the search filters and various top lists. This Otohiko's average given star rating for over 200 vids is about 4.35. Because this Otohiko learned to find videos he likes, and appreciate videos not for his own cheap definitions of like and dislike, but for how well they accomplished what they set out to do.

This Otohiko has also started upon rectifying the lack of certain music artists in the database on his own; has gone out and made vids (well, at least one) he always wanted; and also plans to look at DBZ one day (and hopefully in a creative fashion).

So, to all of you who are pissed about too many vids of the sorts you don't like, two ideas:

1) Learn to use filters and top lists
2) Stop complaining and make those perfect videos you think should be made but aren't

Even if 90% of videos on this site were crap (and I doubt that's so), you'd still have about 1000 good vids on Local download, and a good 3600 vids listed; with dozens coming daily.

You'd better pace yourself, idealist-san.

Thirded (well, at least the Eva part; don't know about the others because I haven't seen very many of those).

All the more reason for you to make your own videos. By the way you speak of other videos, it seems you must have some ideas that will climb the top 10%.

Anyways, if you're looking for original/unusual ideas, why are you looking at the top 10%? that's like looking for fresh music from the billboards. (not that the top 10% vids are all unoriginal, it's just that the reason they are there is because they have already gained some popularity; use the search or filters as otohiko mentioned to target original/unusual ideas)

Actually, I keep finding hope in the Top 10%. The majority of videos in there are indeed very good.

Is it just me, or does it sound like the person looked at 'anime used' and never bothered to watch the vids?

I see complaints about people making vids to the same anime and it being 'unoriginal' because of that. But including YYH (and it's Yu Yu - not Ya Ya - Ya Ya is a divine sisterhood in a dramatic American movie) - now that proves the mistake. I've watched almost every amv on the org using that anime, and I can attest that while there are some particular fights which get used in multiple vids, you can download 30 vids for the anime and find at least 3 that show scenes not found in any of the others. And that's just scenes - not to mention the stories or concepts being set *to* that footage.

Watch the vids before you gripe about them. Looking at the title of the anime in no way proves that the person used the same footage as other people. And at least in the case of YYH, I *know* there are a *lot* of scenes in the anime that have *never* been used. I've looked. There are actually episodes from which only one person has ever taken a single clip - me. Don't tell me all the YYH vids are the same, or that just because a person uses that anime s/he is using the same clips as other people. It's a boldfaced lie and proves you didn't watch the vids.
