This is the situation:
Our local (dutch) con is having it's anual AMV contest soon. Last year there were about 10 entries and at most 80 - 100 people in the room. Like last year they will have a jury's prize. In contrast to last year I'd like them to introduce a "fan favorite" award giving the fans the chance to choose their favorite video.
Now comes the problem; seeing as there is an extremely limited amount of spectators, how would it be possible to organize such a vote without the person with the most friends winning automatically?
How do other contests organise things like this?

In such a situation an anonymous vote should be held. This way their friends can still lie and say "I voted for you" without feeling bad that they really didn't.
You'll just have to trust them to be honest when it comes to which one they vote for.
Changing someone's perspective is hard when they have an affinity for something (i.e. a friends work).
-I just thought of another way-
Maybe, you could have each person, vote for their top 3 favorites. That way they could put their friends at the top and two others they honestly enjoyed.
But instead of taking them rated in order, just tally all three up for every vote. Whichever gets the highest # is the fan favorite because more people had it in the top 3. Although you won't be able to give out voting statistics (giving away your genius plan) you can still determine the fan favorite.
Warharhaharhar!!! I surprised myself with that one!

That's pretty ingenious. I like the sound of it. I'll suggest it, I wonder what they think...
