RahXephon - Help Me Understand! (SPOILERS!)

So I've finally finished RahXephon, and wholeheartedly approve of the series. In response to most people's claims that it's just Eva-Lite, I say it's Eva without the whole religious thing, which makes it cooler. The characters also aren't so polarized and don't seem as extreme as in Eva.

In trying to understand the series, I've tried to use Eva as something to compare it to. However, there are gaps. I welcome any corrections so that I may understand the show better and appriciate it more than I already do.

Ayato = Shinji, naturally. However, Ayato isn't a complete pussy and seems to have more solid emotional footing.

RahXephon = Evangelion Unit 01. Ayato merges with it and completes the whole tuning-of-the-world thing.

Quon = Rei. A creation of a strange organization (the Foundation) for the purpose of "tuning the world". Like Rei, she's mysterious, tends to speak in poetic terms, and has unnaturally colored hair.

Reika = Rei as well? I'm still trying to figure her out, and I think most of my confusion lies in the fact that I never quite understood Reika's purpose

Haruko = Misato. This is the closest I can get to a complete match. She loves Ayato much like Misato loves Shinji.

TERRA = NERV. I need not go farther into detail.

Lord Bahbem = Gendo Ikari. Evil dude who wants to shape the world for his own ambitions.

The Foundation = SELEE. Evil organization created to shape the world.

Dolem = Angels.

Vermillions = Eva Mass-Production series.

There are probably a few more (in fact, I'm sure of it), but it's late and I'm tired.

Anyway, I would appriciate any advice/comments that anybody can offer in terms of trying to understand RahXephon. I'm by no means completely baffled, but much like with Evangelion I still need to figure some thigns out.

Yes, I agree with you, RahXephon is very good. I also just finished it not to long ago.

I'll offer something up about Reika...

If I remember right Reika is the heart/spirit of the RahXephon. Her purpose is to get Ayato to merge with the RahXephon in order to tune the world. She isn't human, and she just took on the form Ayato desired most, young Haruko, so he would be more willing to merge with the RahXephon. BTW, I think she also resembles Rei from Eva. She too is mysterious like Rei.

Megumi = shows similarities with Auska, like being a bitch for a while, except she actually likes Ayato for a while.

I would think Elvy was more similar, myself.

After all, Elvy has her complex about how they don't need the RahXephon to win and how she hates being backup to Ayato, much like Asuka resented being Shinji's backup.

The reason you are confused is because you are looking at it wrong. Stop comparing it to Eva. There are a few similarites and a few more things that could be similarites if you really stretch, but other than those few things it's nothing like Eva. Watch it again judging based solely on it's own merits and you will probably get it a lot better.
