p.s. I almost forgot one other part on that (if I don't get this out, I'll go loco)
To add to the 'fanservice' factor, one has the fact the creator deliberately left the Wing boys' sexualities ambiguous (OK...so a part of this was due to the fact the director openly admitted he couldn't do romance to save his life...but part of it was still in the interests of hooking people...what can I say? I'm one of those people who really prefers they leave these things a little more clear-cut...but then I might just be a minority on this...
(...and NOW we retun you to the thread already in progress)

I sed GENRE not gender.Arigatomyna wrote:There are gender rules? Please tell them to me. ^_^;; I've always thought Rosiel (Angel Sanctuary) was a woman - whether he's supposed to be male or not, every part of his features scream 'female' to me. What are the tips to let you know if a character is supposed to be male? [Aside from the lack of breasts, of course. ;p ]Nestorath69 wrote:Second off- I knew it was a dude from the first moment. It's kind of tricky, but the genre rules say that the cheeks would have to be fuller and the chin less pointed for it to be female.

Can you explain how the GENRE rules explain how gender is determined according to the shape of the face? Explain the source of this GENRE rule that:

Often, the Japanese group of styles call for slightly different curvature of cheekbones in the male and female, along with wider eye spacing for females. It's very subtle, but after a while trying to pay attention to these things I am rarely caught out theser days.

Does it depend on the artist then? Or the type of anime? I'm honestly curious about this - I don't know much about this sort of thing. ^_^Savia wrote:Often, the Japanese group of styles call for slightly different curvature of cheekbones in the male and female, along with wider eye spacing for females. I think it's just a kind of unconscious thing that a lot of artists use, perhaps without even realising it.Arigatomyna wrote:Does it depend on the artist then? Or the type of anime? Male. Note the cheeks are sloped first straight, then sharper. Eyes far apart to emphasise femininity.

Nuriko (male character) from Fushiigi Yuugi looking manly. Again note cheeks.

Nuriko looking female. The cheeks are now a smooth curve.

And Tenou Haruka (female), another masculine lady with cheeks that are somewhere between the two extremes.
I couldn't find any pictures to demonstrate the eye seperation thing nicely, but if you've seen Last Exile, a look at Deeo in comparison with the females of the series might help.
