OK...I initially promised myself I would keep my mouth shut on this (since m/m isn't my average cup of coffee if you take my meaning)
But I'm a bit confused now...initially the definitions I'd heard were that it was only yaoi if they were, (for lack of better terms) running for home plate together, and that the rest was considered shounen-ai. Yet, here I'm noticing the phrase yaoi getting quite a bit more use...could someone please clarify for me where one stops and the other begins?
(Now then...so this stays remotely OT...if you want to go for it, more power to ya...can't say I'm big on the idea, but hey...if Togashi left it open, that's his call (personally, I only have issue when it's a breach of canon)...I'm not big on the idea, but, like they say 'Don't like it, no one's making you watch it...')

Well for the question, technically yaoi means sex between two males when used in doujinshi and fanfiction/etc. But the word is also used to refer to anything involving two men and sexual settings (whether it's sexual interest or the act itself). Shonen ai is literally shonen=boy/ai=love - referring to any sort of love between males. But usually people use it to refer to romantic love between males. The real origin of 'yaoi' comes from 'yama-nashi, ochi-nashi, imi-nashi,' or 'no climax, no resolution, no meaning' - and most accurately refers to meaningless sex between males. Most actual fanworks contain more shonen ai than straight yaoi (at least for the sort of 'yaoi' where couples are romantically inclined rather than just physically attracted to each other).
As for this vid, it would be shonen ai if I did it - but people would still refer to it as yaoi just because it's two males.

Exactly. ^_^SSj-Nandez wrote:Thats because yaoi is the most common word used for this.Shonen ai they probally never heard or don't understand what it means.So they gust turn and say its yaoi.
It's a genre now (unofficial) that encompasses anything with even the slightest hints of shonen ai. It's just a short word (accronym) that's easy to remember for those who don't know the basics of anime-related japanese.
Almost like baka being more well-known than yaro even though more anime characters *use* yaro as a consistent term of insult. Pick what's easiest to remember and go with it... ^_^;;

Heh, it's like my reviewable score for the Kenshin/Tomoe vids. ^_^;; Can't help it if some things squick you - just avoid them as much as you can and you can coexist peacefully. As long as reviewable is the only thing effected, it's all good. ^.~Paulo wrote:Hmm I don't like Yaoi too , but I can make reviews in Yaoi (right Ari ?) vids without any prob 8) , well I have to say that the scores for reviewability gonna be very low
