Ya never know man. Bestbuy's in particular are just about everywhere. At the same time, the probability that an artist or anime company being at that particular Bestbuy and then seeing their video/song on the tv/computer are slim, but the chance still exists yes? ..... Sure unlikely, but still a non-zero percentage probability.
There's a chance that they might just walk into your house one day and see your AMVs too you know |:

tis non-zero : ]
It's true. DUN DUN DUNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN, but I'm willing to take that gamble.

Obviously someone playing someone else's videos at a commercial store is something different entirely.

Couldn't you say the same thing about anime cons?

Or do cons have some kind of "You-can't-punish-the-editors-who-made-the-videos-shown-in-our-contest-even-if-you're-the-artists-or-anime-companies" type of thing?

My video was playing at Fry's? Cool :-)

I used to worry about stuff like that, now after 5 years of making AMVs and not being sued or anything I'm not worried. I've heard of similar things - like a Media Play in Nashville playing my videos in their Anime section. A couple of my AMVs have shown on public TV too (without me knowing about it until after.)

If anything I think only the store would get in trouble for showing material that they shouldn't. Best Buy was mentioned many times in this thread - they constaly play music, show movies, computer games, etc., etc. I don't think it would raise any eyebrows at all.

I wonder what will happen once my DVD is done and I start shipping out copies ;-D

Actually if you've entered Otakon (I think it was Otakon), they had us mail in some slip where we signed and gave them permission and I wanna say that it also included something about owning the music (but I could be wrong there).

At the same time, you'll notice that a handful of cons don't accept anything from Disney whether it's a song or movie. I know Anime Central does that. You could extrapolate that to anime companies, but obviously A) they're not bitches like Disney (come on, they sued a kindergarten) and B) they're smart enough to realize free publicity.

My original intent in replying was to just point out the possibility of getting in trouble which is still obviously non-zero.

A con will - or should - purchase a license to play copyrighted music during the con. For video...no one seems to care.

But close enough to zero not to be a worry. Like Aluminum wrote, the stores are playing music and movies all day long on displays all over the store. I don't know for sure, but I doubt they pay any special fees. It's just in-store advertising.

As long as they don't play any of MJ's ecchi-vids...don't want to discourage any old ladies from buying those 23" LCD monitors. :)
