Alrighty, till tomorrow night *about 9 or so*, could you guys do me a favour and answer HONESTLY please...I'm not gonna flame you for your answers, *whatever they may be* , but I'm writing an "expose on anime" for my Writer's Craft class...and I want to include an informal poll...
So if you would, please answer the following questions:
1. Do you own fansubs of unlicensed anime?
2. If so do you destroy these when liscensed version come available?
3. Do you download anime that is already liscensed?
and...
4. (Please keep brief).... Do you believe fansubs of unliscensed anime helps to promote its release in areas other that japan?
Thank you people...and if you don't want to post here, please PM me...you'd be doing me a big favour ^^

Yes, although until you asked I hadn't thought about it. I believe that exposure in this fashion lets the companies know what might be popular amongst the more ardent anime fans. But that's only a small proportion of the population.Moonlight Soldier wrote:4. (Please keep brief).... DISCLAIMER - I'M NOT PROMOTING ANY UNETHICAL DOWNLOAD PRACTICES by posting the following.
Well, honest answer:
1) Yes
2) No (Even if I subsequently buy the show, I keep the fansubs for reference)
3) Not usually (though I won't rip anyone's head off (including my own) for occasionally doing so)
4) Yes. Definitely. I would never get exposed to original, non-dubbed, non-edited anime otherwise and would never have become much of an anime customer at all. As practical evidence shows, even if I don't buy all that I download, I do end up spending an increasingly large proportion of my limited income on anime.
So, hate me if you want... I'm just being honest.

Since it would be redundant to just answer yes to all those, I will tell you what I do in steps:
1. If I hear about an unlicensed anime that might be good, I usually download atleast 1 ep of the series.
2. If I like the anime stated above, I download most the eps of it.
3. If I really like it, when its dubbed I buy all the DVDs (Vandread and Onegai Teacher are two examples of this)
4. If there is a series that has already been dubbed and I want to check it out, I usually download the first 3 eps in order to get a good grasp if its good or not. If I like it, I buy the series, if I dont like it I dont bother with it anymore.
5. I do believe that fansubs do help promote animes, atleast before they are dubbed (ie Naruto).
Anyways, I didn't exactly stick to your format, but I believe I answered all your questions.

1. Yes
2. No Just because it is licensed doesn't mean I must destroy my property however I will not distribute it for I respect the licenses.
3. Hmm... I'm not entirely sure. I started downloading a few series when they were unlicensed and later after I had them all I noticed that they were licensed. I might have gotten them all before but I can't be sure. I use different methods to get episodes now so this is no longer an issue for me as the episoded are removed from web distro as soon as they become licensed.
4. Certainly... At least for me. Had it not been for fan subs I wouldn't be into anime. Almost everything I own on dvd I alreadly had seen fansubbed. I already plan to make a music video from azumanga daioh(excelent series btw) because I saw it fansubbed which means I will be getting the dvds as soon as they come out as I have been doing with my Noir video Idea. Finally can start working on that one.

2. Yes, but after I buy the licensed stuff.

3. Yes, but it is just so I can see what the show is like.
4. Yes, like others have said it lets potential fans see what the show is like and if they like it influences them to buy the licensed anime.
