Show me the ANGST

I'm looking for an angsty, depressed anime character who borders on the insane side. Male OR female, but male is preferred. Any suggestions?

Any other preferences, like genre of anime or anything?

Okay, let's limit it to only MALES, and the following are preferred:

+ The character has an crazy obsession with something or someone
+ The character dies (or almost dies) during the anime

My anime list is short, but Dilandau from The Vision of Escaflowne will fit the profile. (He's actually a woman turned into a man). He's pretty angsty and depressed, haunted by his past, and nearly dies when the main character (Van) fights him.

I'd say Aki from Ayashi no Ceres(Ceres: celestial Legend)... Atleast, I think he fits the bill... Haven't seen/read all of Ceres, so I couldn't tell you exactly.

Also, Quatre from Gundam Wing is GREAT. He goes ballistic when he gets the Wing Zero and starts destroying colonies and stuff... Couldn't tell you what he's obsessed with, though.

While it's only a borderline obsession:

Jerid Mesa - Mobile Suit Z Gundam - There's a rivalry with Camille right off the bat, but it doesn't start to slide into obsession until ep 7 or so (can't remember the exact number...need to rewatch)

By the end of the series he's (Jerid) lost three people he's cared about to him (Camille) and is now thoroughly fixated on payback

Zaha from Sorcerer Hunters - obsessed with destroying the world, nearly dies after he takes the spirits into him.

Sensui, the sponser of Togure team (can't think of his name at the moment) from Yu Yu Hakusho - both want to destroy the human world by bringing in demons, both end up dying in the end, though Sensui's death is slower and more 'sad' while the other's is sharp and dramatic. Don't know why I can't think of his name...

Zechs from Gundam Wing - obsessed with fighting (nearly ruins the earth at one point with large cannon), you get some good 'crazy' shots of him at odd times, and he nearly dies twice - once by Treize's orders and later during the explosion with Heero.

Aoshi from Rurouni Kenshin (and lots of others from this series) - obsessed with getting the title of 'strongest' which just means defeating Kenshin, he has a number of 'crazy' type shots in the series, and he nearly dies twice - once after he's shot up and his friends die, and later when Kenshin hits him with his final attack.

Miraki from Yami no Matsuei - obsessed with bringing his brother back to life so he can kill him, more than enough psycho scenes, and he nearly dies from a knife wound and nice fiery blaze.

Yeah, and lots more. ^_^;

I thought of him immediately, but I didn't want to brave the required round of "icky icky boys yuk" flames.
