Star System, Flawed?

Post by Nemoxs » Sun Jul 06, 2003 2:17 pm

This is related to mv's so i figured i'd post it here,

I've been watching people people down star system votes for a while now i've come to the conclusion that star votes are pointless.

Whenever someone is force to vote for something by star voting, most of the time they've already forgotten the video in the first place and their just voting on something that they've either forgotten or dont care about.

So must of the time they just end up opening the little windows throwing down any number that their mouse clicks and boom.. you're done.. thats a great ratings system ~_~;;.

Normaly I whouldnt complain but i've seen alot of good videos get bad star scores, and it seems to me like it's just a waste of time.

I'm particularly picky with the star rating. I think I've given out maybe 1 or 2 "4-Star" scores, 0 "5-star" scores, and bunches of 2 and 3-Star Scores. All I know is that my average is currently below a 3 for star ratings, and that's where I want to keep it.

Personally, I'd prefer people be harsh with the star ratings so that only the real cream of the crop are getting scores of 4 and 5.

Can i just say, the people who do mine must be on crack or something,

My bad videos have scores of like 3.50 and 4.00 and the good ones have scores of like 2.00 and shit... WTF!?

btw most of them have between 15 and 20 votes on the star scale

The way I see the star system, it's annonymous. You don't leave your name, you don't have a place or reason to leave any explanation for your scores, so there's no need to rate according to a guideline like the 'ratings' review system. I treat stars as opinion more than anything. If I think a video is okay - good, not bad, then I'll give it a 3 on average. If I think it's poorly done or if it has certain flaws, it goes down to the 2 or 1 areas. Once I have a video that I see as good (at 3), the rating goes up depending on how good it is. If I think it's very well made it'll get a 4. And if I love it (meaning I'd give a 10 for reviewability) it will get a rare 5 - I've given one or two of those, and those videos had already hit the 4 for being very good in my opinion. My average for star ratings is about 2.8 since few videos meet my idea of '5 - well made and I love it' and more fall into the 3 or lower categories.

And any more general amv discussions you want to have would really go better in the 'General AMV' section. ^_~

I normally vote for stars right after i watch the video and leave some ops as well....
