storyboards or "on the fly?"
holler peoples...your friendly neighborhood Spyder Dan is here to yet again take time away from your regularly schedualed internet browsing experience 8)
im curious as to how everyone here plans out their videos in advance.
are you the kind of person who likes to write down frame ideas along with sketches of each frame?
or
do you just watch each clip and just put in what you think works best at that part in the timeline?
talk it up...i find this intresting 8)

Re: which do you prefer....
I plan. I even some times go so far as to write it down. Basically, since most of my AMVs aren't done immediately (as in right when I get the idea), if I listen to the song and hear another thing that could work, I write it down as a potential scene with a timestamp.SpYdEr_Dan wrote:storyboards or "on the fly?"

I find this works pretty well and my last video (not on the .org yet) was completed with relative ease since 90% of it was already planned. All I had to do was go find the clip and drop. It also shows in the quality since that much more thought was placed into each scene selected.

Well, I'm currently working on my second vid, so I really can't say from experience the way I work the amv.
I geuss, I get an idea when listening to a song. I match it with an anime whose scenes I think could fit well with the song. I get some mental preview/idea of what I'm aiming for and start to work. I go kinda piecemill on the video working seperate parts of the song while keeping the connecting theme in mind.

The last video I made was in my head for the better part of a year, if I recall correctly. I didn't have the necessary DVDs for it, so I just let it wait for a while.
And there's no need to get extreme; people don't "sketch out frame by frame." Personally, I write up a summary for myself when the idea first comes to me, and then let the idea cook for a while - bring it to mind whenever I hear the song - and if ideas come up, take notes interleaved with the lyrics. Not always which shots I'm going to use, but usually the ideas I'll try to put across. It'll slowly get filled in, like an outline, while I try to have the "finished product" in my head. (Needless to say, it's never as good in the end, but you know.
)
The clips themselves are usually picked on the spot. Not "Hm, this goes here BAM!"; I tend to dump everything at the end of the timeline and sort shots out according to mood or theme, then sort them out again and pick whatever looks best from that. I'm terribly messy and probably assbackwards, but that's what I like to do.
So summary - outline - editing.

The one I'm working on right now requires a specific storyboard because I don't have the necessary HD space to support ripping 3 DVDs in Huffy. So I need to know EXACTLY which clips I'm using and rip only those. But otherwise, I'd say use a combination of both. Make a general storyboard if you feel more comfortable, but don't be afraid to change it on the fly if you discover something else that would work better.
My "biggie" that I'm planning requires a frame-by-frame storyboard, though...because...oh heck, it's a surprise!!!!!!
