- Trans-Siberian Orchestra There Was a Life
So, after an almost 4-year hiatus from AMV creation, I decided to jump back in the pool. As any editor knows, AMV Bunnies are worse than Plot Bunnies in some cases, and this idea was no exception.
This combo put the cart before the horse in the sense that I knew I wanted to use the song in a video at some point. Trans-Siberian Orchestra is a highly underrated source in the AMV world, as most seem to think "Christmas Eve/Sarajevo" and "Wizards in Winter" are all they've done. In reality, they are a veritable gold mine for drama videos, and their latest album, Night Castle, is the most heartwrenching collection of music ever penned (at least in my humble opinion). The trouble was finding an anime that was anywhere near its equal.
To be honest, very few anime have ever affected me the way this music did, and certainly not a single one produced in the last few years. I was browsing through my DVD collection in vain trying to find something that would spark my interest when I happened to pick up Grave of the Fireflies. I had not seen the movie in a very long time, as it's the kind of film that I try not to watch over and over because I really like not being a suicidal wreck. But for this case, it just clicked. This anime and this song were meant to go together like a peanut butter and marshmallow fluff sandwich of sad, depressing win.
Editing this one was difficult if only because I had to take frequent Happy Breaks, and it's times like these that I thank the Internet Gods for the existence of the Cheezburger Network and Cracked.com. What I wanted more than anything with this video was to capture all of Seita's emotions in one song, from fear and guilt, to his tenacity even in the face of hopelessness. And I hope I suceeded.
