We've Lost Dancing
AWA masters submission. For me, 2021 was mostly about grieving what we've lost as a society since COVID hit. Some things seem to be slowly returning to normal these days, but angst from the original fallout still lingers. Just like COVID! The song was made around March and represents a thin ray of hope from when people were still optimistic that vaccinations would let us return back to normalcy in "six months". While that didn't exactly pan out, some things are back. This felt like an important amv to try to get played at a con, so I submitted it to AWA masters. It got played and I hope people liked it. Even though I wouldn't call our reality six months later "marvelous", I think it's good to hold out hope that things will get better.

So uh.... Congratulations on making the third AMV to ever make me cry so far.
In all seriousness I honestly wasn't expecting this to hit me so hard. I feel like overall this is supposed to be an uplifting video, however despite the content being specifically around dancing (and occasionally other things mentioned by the lyrics), you've done an excellent job at capturing the tone and well, everything, from the past year or so.
Dancing is also a very expressive art, visually and emotionally, so it works well as a proxy for whatever else might be missing
As with most of your work, this had my attention completely and I was swept along for the ride.

Re: We've Lost Dancing
There are so many things in common between dance and life, this video made me think about many of them and how everything changes, good job!!

Re: We've Lost Dancing
Full disclosure: I'm sick of everything being about COVID. It's all I've heard about everywhere for the last year and a half; every conversation seems to invoke it, everything I read online references it, and it's infiltrated a lot of art as well. Understandably, of course; but I'm so burned out on the topic that when I start to see content creators I like put it in their work I have an allergic reaction to it. So I went into this video with a lot cynicism and skepticism and I'm amazed at how well you pulled this off. I feel like I would just be repeating a lot of what Katranat already said so I don't have much to add. The emotions in this video are more complex and nuanced than COVID AMVs tend to be. It hit me in ways I wasn't expecting.
One of your best videos. Fantastic work.

Thanks everyone. I get very emotional when watching this and it's good to hear other people feel the same way.
Random story on COVID burnout. As an experiment my wife and I tried to see how long we could go without talking about COVID. We set up this whiteboard:

We never managed to break our record of 2 days and eventually just gave up, but during this time we at least talked less about COVID. So that was nice.

I really enjoyed this. I'm not sure why, maybe it's the repetitive nature of the audio, but I kinda tuned out what was being said and just got lost in the flow, it was a relaxing edit to watch.

Re: We've Lost Dancing
A minute or so into this and I really wasn't sure if it was going to hook me or not. And then it just kind of clicked and everything before it felt just perfect and everything that follows just dunks all my doubts and cynicism in a hot cup of PLUR and eats it for breakfast.
Always felt kind of weird about the "dance AMV" that features club music but mixes together ballet, ballroom dancing, breakdancing, etc., just a whole bunch of different stuff that doesn't really work together within the space of a singular AMV. (Unless you're a killjoy like I am, that sentence won't make any sense, if you don't get it then don't worry). BUT I will say that the diversity of the source material here and the different takes on what "dance" is or what it can be definitely reinforces the themes that you're exploring here and contributes to a very inclusive emotional impact.
This could've been an overly sentimental mess but you actually got your point across in a convincing way that feels earned and real.
Really love that final shot, it resonates with the sampled dialogue so perfectly. Going back to the Carole and Tuesday clip that precedes it, oh man this really ends on such a beautiful high note.
