Slow it Down, an AMV about anxiety

Post by vivafruit » Wed Nov 25, 2020 4:04 pm

This is a song that bounced off of me at first that I slowly found myself coming back to. Since it's so short you don't really good impression of it the first time, but I think it's pretty special. Making an AMV for it came pretty naturally and I'm happy with the result.

I borrowed a lot of clips out of a short film called Puparia that released recently. If you liked the hand drawn scenes in the AMV I'd recommend taking three to watch the entire short, here: https://youtu.be/CWnqX41JHuM

I enjoyed this. It more or less captures the overarching themes of events and emotions that 2020 seems to encapsulate, which is a pretty sweeping statement, but I think you did a good job with it. The editing is mostly solid, although there were a few moments with somewhat jarring, discontinuous motion between two scenes (the scene change at the 0:24-0:25 mark is one; the switch to Lain at 2:05 also felt off to me, though maybe for different reasons, idk), but mostly it was fine and I of course like your simple approach.

Nice job! It's been interesting to track your progress over this year.

Great, thanks! I'm glad the "2020" theme translated well. It's been a pretty crazy year and was definitely on my mind as I was putting the AMV together.

The parts you pointed out stuck out to me as well as being awkward. I think for Lain the issue is that the bright green color palette just doesn't jive well when played right after the mostly normal coloring on the weathering with you clip. I fiddled with both spots, but never really got it perfect. This seems to happen a lot when making AMVs. You just sort of slowly improve stuff until you shrug and say "yeah good enough".

Fingers crossed that I get to someday see a 2nd season of What Makes it Great. :)

This.

I really liked it too. The simple editing style does the flow of this justice in my eyes.

If you want a recommendation to improve a little more, once you finish up the project, like you have, I'd play around with different transitions between scenes at this point.

You already got flow and style down so I'd just recommend, between different scenes with different anime shows, try to put in maybe like a bit of camera motion, play with some color correction or some masking to help transition between different scenes, if you'd like. Don't have too, just something if you wanna and have some time.

Also, the internal sync with the eyes at 0:52 <3 <3 <3

I like short AMVs tbh. Even AMVs that are only like 30 seconds long are a thrill to watch too. No time limit necessary, just chill and have fun I think :bear:

This ended up being great advice. I did exactly this for my newest AMV, and when I was looking for it, I definitely noticed some spots that had awkward transitions. Most of the time they're fixable with a simple dissolve.

The doomscrolling scenes in the opening segment were spot on, not sure if they even needed to be custom-edited for current events but I suppose that there could have been something incredibly misleading or confusing in their place if you hadn't.

I was little bit suspicious of the inclusion of Puparia so soon after it was released but those scenes really feel like the music sounds and their appearance here is not only beautiful but extremely appropriate for the tone you're trying to establish.

I love that every one of your AMVs has a unique flavor or an immediately understandable theme. This one has both and was very enjoyable and relaxing.

Thanks a lot. Yeah, one thing I always try for is having a very clear controlling idea that drives clip selection. I had had the video idea bouncing in my head for a while, and just happened to watch Puparia the same week I was looking for clips. Sometimes you just luck out.
