I Think Loud [Serial Experiments Lain]

Post by AMVAR » Wed Oct 03, 2018 10:24 pm

Recently all my closest friends became ill, these near death experience made my think about my childhood. I remembered buying an anime's magazine called Dokan. Inside, there was a CD containing many videos, two of them made a deep impression on me. One was an AMV from Golden Boy with music from Blumchen and the other a Kenshin one with Wait and Bleed from Slipknot.

Luckily all my friends have recovered and are healthy as ever! I wanted to celebrate them by making my first AMV with my favorite anime, Serial Experiments Lain. Also, it's my 28th birthday so what better day to share it!

Big big hugs,
AMVAR

Happy 28th Birthday, and welcome to the org |:> Also, glad to hear that your friend is doing well :D

In terms of the video, you definitely picked a good song that matches the creepy mood of Lain really well  . I do think that you could have synced to more of the sound effects though (although I totally get that there's just so many of them :asd: ).

This was a really interesting video, not just because of what you did, but because of what you didn't do. I think a lot of people would have chosen to do a lot of flashy sync to all the sounds, especially in the first half of the video, and you instead decided to take a more reserved approach. I wouldn't have complained if you had done faster cuts and more sync, but weirdly I think this worked just as well the way you did edit it. I absolutely loved this, one of the most intriguing videos I've seen in a long time, and I think you have the ability to make some really unique stuff if you continue in this direction.

Really excellent work

I’m actually working on a AMV featuring this anime as well right now, although with a more upbeat song, so it was interesting to watch what you did here.

Visual/Audio: You stayed very faithful to the source material. I didn’t notice any color, zoom, or blur effects that were added (perhaps I missed them). I think this video if it was cropped to a wide screen format could have been more engrossing and you wouldn’t have lost much content by cropping. The audio fit the AMV great as well. The mood is very techy and fits the theme of the anime.

Synchronization: You did a great job finding scenes within the actual anime to sync with the various sound effects in the song and did not try to create the sync externally through effects. The anime itself has a lot of material for you to use and therefore you were able to pull it off fairly seamlessly. The last minute was definitely the highlight and where your sync work stood out the most. The first half was eerie and the last half intense.

An enjoyable and engaging watch.

Thanks! Hope in the next weeks I can dig deeper on this website. Wish I knew it existed way before I did as I'm sure now I'll be spending my time watching new videos. Yep syncronichizing all, would be madness, sure could be a good challenge hehe.

Thanks! It's been 7-8 years since I started editing. I remember at first being obsessed with syncing everything like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UmSzc8mBJCM . Then I went the opposite way hehe. Recently I've been trying to find a balance between the two, the expected (synced) and the unexpected (not synced). Watching now again, I could definitely myself adding some more images I didn't get to use. Thanks again for encouraging me to keep doing! Makes me want to work harder!

Thanks for the mindful feedback!
Will sure keep an eye on it when you publish it. There's never enough Lain hehe. Soo many options to choose from and all of them beautiful!

I really like this.

Hard for me to put my finger on why other than just commenting on the sources themselves, which tells you nothing.

Feels like you're onto something but I can't say what it is. I've probably watched this 6 times by now.

Upload? Just thought I'd ask.

6 Times?! That makes me happy!

Maybe a really stupid question: Is uploading the video here a way to have an AMV library of some kind? I feel bad for occupying space here hehe.

BTW, loved your post on Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou + The Fragrance of Dark Coffee. I'll definitely check the series! Relaxing series are so difficult to find!

Don't need to feel bad, that's literally the purpose of this website. Uploading it here allows people to download it in full quality and in case something happens to it on YT (i.e. it's taken down due to copyright strike or something), people can still grab it here.

Will surely upload it now, thanks :)
