can we talk about these AMVs?

Who are the people making these AMVs?

Why do they all look the same and follow the same structure? I mean, do they look the same to you or is it just me?

How do people find the time to keep making these technically-complicated, intensively-layered-effects-heavy AMVs? Does everyone who's not on the Org -- out there somewhere, I honestly don't know where -- crowdsource and share their masks now?

What I don't understand is how/why anyone would take the time to learn these kind of techniques, become an editor who's skilled enough to pull them off, and yet have absolutely no interest in making anything that's not a slightly different variation of the same idea again and again. I don't understand the motivation. I'm not half the editor that most people here are but I know for sure that the only reason I ever put time into this and tried to teach the ins and outs of these programs was because I had an idea that didn't exist, and I knew it never would unless I did something about it myself.

Why are there on-screen lyrics in all of these AMVs?

How did this get started? Has it become the new norm? Are the kind of AMVs we make here on the way out? Because these are all chalking up ridiculous numbers of views and these are the videos that people are watching when they're first getting into AMVs (or think they're getting into AMVs). Thanks to the Internet, enough people can redefine anything they feel like (example: within about 3 years, "dubstep" went from referring to something like this to something quite different).

Are these the "candy" AMVs that Fraulein was asking about?

Are these played at conventions or is this strictly a Youtube phenomenon?

Is it possible that I'm not just being condescending here, but am somehow missing out on how amazing these AMVs obviously are.

I'll take my answer off the air.

Good Lord I want to scratch my eyes out. I'll compose a decent response later, those videos pissed me off too much.

...Sometimes I think I take this hobby too seriously.

@ CrackTheSky - I do agree with you that people can take this hobby to seriously.

However if they enjoy doing this as a hobby, some people are more talented then others " technically ". Doesn't mean those people know how to tap into the heart and soul of an AMV. I was facing this several years ago as an editor and sure it discourage me. Then I came back to editing because I missed it and wanted to do it in my style. However still today people will always try to make their AMV's flashy, why? Because flashy sells to a lot of people and contests. However when one technique becomes overdone they move on to the next, and the next. It will always be like this. People will follow what is successful at the moment.

That just not with AMV's, but goes for anything. Another example would be card games and deck building. Notice there are always a certain few decks in a format that are mirrored off of each other because they are successful.

Personally if I use a popular anime, or an effect it is because I feel like it belongs in my AMV, not for the purpose of a competition.

All flash, no substance.

I never cared for these types of videos nor ever feared going up against them in contests. Audiences will vote for something far more emotionally engaging than be fooled by candy sprinkles all over the screen. :bzz:

But now we live in a world where people have much worse ADD, watch videos primarily on youtube, and need pretty colors to keep their attention. There's your answer.

CrackTheSky said that he takes things too seriously (referring to the fact that candy style pisses him off), not that those editors take it too seriously.

it's a trend derived from motion graphics, albeit bad or not nicely executed motion graphics. though here is an example of good

I could swear there were a few of these at Anime Expo last year, it's just a style that's associated with upbeat videos, isn't it?

I understand feeling upset... but it's just another style of AMV... and one that I think a lot of people enjoy because of bright colors + movement. Possibly some are also getting most of their hits on YouTube from people looking for lyrics, or for popular songs (which is why they're all pitched up or down because of heavy copyright). I'm sure they're very difficult to make so I'd never go thumb my nose at it. It's just not my style at all. They're not intended to tell a story at all, they just look flashy and cute and present the lyrics.

That style of stuff infested the MLP video scene to the point it's become pretty difficult to find any good videos that aren't tainted by it. I've seen far worse, though. At least these look nice.

Style over substance brings views. I mostly see them as MEPs organized by studios on youtube.

I was wondering what you org guys might've thought about the true candy vids out there.
It seems like it's mostly a youtube thing that certain MEP studios do. I'm impressed by alot of them because of the seemingly complicated motion graphic work involved. I asked one of those studios if they were doing all that with AE and got a response saying most of the members just use Vegas.. I didn't quite believe them though, but maybe they were telling the truth and if that's the case then maybe there's a source of motion renders out there or a plugin that makes doing these effects alot easier because those same types of videos are too similar and consistent to be a coincidence.. it's all kinda fishy.
