Re: [Otakon 2012] Angelic Tribute
I'm not sure how to take this AMV.
It's got some really solid parts (the band scenes, the action scenes with TK, and the action scenes fighting angel) that feel extremely well paced and have great scene selection, but then other scenes (ponies, the lip synced portions after the first lip sync, guitar stealing and the harvest farm scenes) seemed really out of place and took away from the experience. So I'm at a toss up here. I think it's an extremely unique take on angel beats, and the fact that I tolerated this song (I uh, hate Tenacious D) and found the AMV interesting is a big task to accompllish. The font was also not as good as it could have been and really felt unnecessary.
Minor visual quality issues. It was really blocky/bandy at times.
Still, I give it a pretty nice approval. Entertaining and an interesting concept with Angel beats.

First and foremost: Thanks for both the detailed opinion, as well as the post you've done right here. It really is appreciated.
Yeah, I have no damn clue how it got blocky / bandy at some parts. I ripped it straight off of the BluRay Discs. I edited the m2ts files straight on Vegas and rendered to Huffyuv. From there, I two-pass rendered to high quality MKV with x264 / Handbreak aiming for ~100 MB (ended up at 104MB, but good enough). As far as I can tell, the original BluRay rips are just blocky (not everywhere, but at those "blocky" parts), so there is nothing I can do about that
And unless you can think of a more reliable method of ripping than simply decrypting the damn m2ts file that is as good as it was going to get.
Its frustrating that the BluRays were varying in quality so much. Though, to be fair, it got blockier as I compressed the video from Huffyuv to the mkv file. But I can't just submit a 8GB file now can I?
As for the joke part... beta testers were split on the joke. The ones who didn't like it hated it... but were forgiving of the video in general. The ones who did like it really liked it (indeed, its the part that got the most laughs from the crowd at Otakon). On the other hand, it makes it look somewhat like a half-assed comedy video because we had so few jokes. (This wasn't designed to be comedy, we tried to play the song "straight" for the most part). At the end of the day, because the scene was only a stanza or so... we ended up leaving it in to hedge the bronies. But yeah, this was definitely a controversial choice to both me and my partner.
Again, thanks for your opinion!

I loved it! that was awesome! I am keeping a copy of it. It fit better than I imagined when I read the song and the source. Lately the use of band footage from anime seems over used, but here it was very appropriate and you matched the beat and strings very well so it was great for this amv. My only advice is to tighten up some of the lip sync sections. But other than that great job
