Hey I'm offended too, but you have to admit, that was semi-clever of him.

How about dem pirates. No really, thats one reason alone these days to have a navy. Deterrence is the best form of dealing with threats/conflict, and navy does that for our waters.

The navy also serves as a long distance port (I couldn't think of a better term). Basically you can't get a significant military force from point "a" to point "b" halfway across the globe without the navy.

They also are more easily made available giving certain situations and can more quickly provide support from coast to coast.

In a perfect world we wouldn't need a Navy like NME suggests but human nature allows for conflict on grand scales. The Navy is for conflict/situations involving long distances and open waters.

I don't know much about the navy so the above is just general come to mind statements honestly. Could probably think a bit more on it but meh, hope I helped some how.
"The people cannot be [...] always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to [...] the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to public liberty. What country can preserve its liberties, if it's rulers are not warned [...] that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants."-Thomas Jefferson

1. Make assumptions about human nature.
2. Make assumptions based on that assumption about human nature.
and so on.

The Navy also assists with blockades and such for trade routes. Economic warfare basically...

There are still uses for a Navy, much of what EvaFan said is along the same lines of my feeling.

Generally, I'm not a millitary man, and probably never could be. But I understand the need for it and have great respect for those who are/were/will be in the military (of any kind.)

I'm pretty sure the assumptions is what Kio is trying to gather here, hence his prerequisites.
