Effects Vs. Raw;
Yarp, this was just something I was curious about.
Do you guys prefer effect-whored amvs full of masking and flashy backgrounds and all that shizz?
Or do you like raw-ish, flowy videos?
Personally, I'm a mix of the two. I enjoy watching both, and enjoy editing both. And I also fail at both. X'D

I tend to make the masking-heavy videos, but that's just me.

Re: Effects Vs. Raw;
My question is, why does it have to be divided between "raw" and "effects" editing? I'm sure a lot of people edit on the middle ground of both.
I despise effect videos for what they're worth, me being the obnoxious pretentious scum that i am, those videos lack the substance i seek most of the time. So i disband them with my soul and condemn them to the lowest pit of hell.
So i guess i prefer "raw"/middle ground between raw + effects

Re: Effects Vs. Raw;
I love making simple cuts/fades, but when I experiment I usually end up playing with some effects. But it's never effect whoring - I plan something like that but who knows when (if even) it will get done.

Re: Effects Vs. Raw;
For the most part I prefer to edit using the techniques available to live broadcast editors. Generally: Overlays, Cuts, Fades, Picture-in-Picture, and basic green screening. That's the extent of the majority of my editing and I prefer it that way. I rarely go beyond a cut and a fade. Some would equate anything other then a hard cut to be an effect, me, I prefer to equate effects similarly to a movie/tv production, anything you'd have special effects come in and do. So in a way yes, I do edit with effects and prefer that. But in reality in the AMV world we usually equate effects to stuff like lens flairs and Video CoPilot stuff and motion graphics and things. In that light, I'd go with 'Raw'.
But really, it all depends on what the video needs. I personally prefer minimal effects and if there are any that they should go un-noticed, but that doesn't mean I hate all 'effects' videos. In the end it really depends on what makes the video work.

As a Viewer:
If it's one of my favorite anime, then I want to see the anime footage. There needs to be a very good reason why the editor mutilated or obscured my favorite scenes with effects. If it's an anime I've never seen, then it depends on why I'm supposed to be watching the vid. If they're advertising the anime, then I need to see the anime footage. If they're advertising their effects, then it doesn't matter what backgrounds are panning along behind those effects since I wouldn't recognize the scenes even if I could make them out.
As an Editor:
I can't do effects. Never could. So by default I stuck with raw anime footage and a few gaudy additions/editions now and then. Some of my favorite vids to edit were ones where I tried (and inevitably failed) to be an effect whore by throwing everything and the kitchen sink at the screen. They were just weird and fun to make even if I never watch the finished product ever again. But my favorites to watch are the basic raw eyecandy darlings, especially the multi-anime ones. All my favorite scenes of all my favorite characters rolled into one vid? I could die from the pure unadulterated eyecandy overload. ^_^
