Planetes - String Theory

Post by Force-Attuned_Krogoth » Wed Jul 29, 2009 10:34 am

Planetes, to the Johnathan Coulton song "Pull the String"

I don't think it's possible to hide the fact that this is my first editing project. I worked and reworked it so much I think it also counts as my second. In the end, I have to publish it sometime, perfectionism and anal retention be damned. This has been one of the most challenging things I've done in my short life, and also one of the best learning experiences. Three months, whittling away on breaks at work, and I still enjoy it. I can't say it's as good as I'd hoped it to be, but I have more to gain by baring it to the world than working it to death in seclusion.

That being said, I welcome any comments. Through the process I tried to be as anal and critical of my work as I could be, but my beta-tester saw flaws and opportunities that I missed. If you think it was worth the time spent watching, then it was worth my time creating it. If you see something that could improve this video, or something I forgot, it can only help me do better in the future.

I thank you for your time,
Krogoth

I like your well-spokenness. And the name of your video. I'll give it a look.

EDIT: I'm just going to get it out of the way now: the quality was awful. I commend you for going with .mp4 for your first video, but there is just something very wrong with the way the video looks. It's almost as if I'm seeing double throughout the whole video; every line seems to have a very slightly offset duplicate. I don't know how better to explain it, but it's distracting. Methinks you may have used downloaded footage?

The concept was clear enough, but only when I read your video description. I like it, it works with the song really well, but I kind of think it may have worked better if you had just focused on one or two things going wrong, instead of a bunch of little vignettes through the video. The song didn't really give enough time to develop these little subplots.

Editing-wise, the video was just...I dunno, unfulfilling. I felt like you could have done more with sync in general, especially from, say, 0:50-1:05. You had some nice percussion there you could have played with, and that was a part of the song that really started to build up. Unfortunately, the video didn't have the same rhythm. There was also a bit too much lip flap for my liking throughout the video.

Overall, it was just very average, more or less what one would expect from a first video.
