How much 'black outline' around a character?

Post by HalOfBorg » Thu Jul 02, 2009 8:04 am

Is there a generally accepted 'BEST' amount? None, some, a lot?

Or is it just a matter of taste? (in that case, opinions please on the image from comedy I am working on.)

Depends on the scene.. just try to match the outline to make it as close to the actual width of the original character drawing.

I think it depends on what kind of perspective you're shooting for. Thick outlines would probably work well in the event that you're doing some kind of heavy-effects background montage and want the 'pop-out' feeling - in which case you'd also probably want to consider depth of field.

As for other uses - like trying to make it the insertion look natural, then thinner lines would be better.

Without knowing the intent, there, though, my eyes tend to prefer the image of Mahoro on the far left.

Heavy effects background montage. I have 2 foreground singers with action to watch on a TV behind them so I think this applies.

Depth of field - as in blurring background when I want people to watch singers? If so ........ I dunno, the timings are pretty damn tight, hardly time for the jokes in the song let alone the video.

As for the left image being the favorite - good, that's the one I liked best AND the one I have dozens of clips set to.

I like the one on the right, but maybe I'm odd.

No, same, I'm partial to the one on the right. It's "cleaner".

That said, isn't this also partly a matter of taste?
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

The one on the left looks too thick, imho. I'd either pick the one on the right or the one on the center. The one on the right looks more natural though, so I guess I'm with Alan on this one.

As for the "thick lines if there are heavy effects in the background", I agree, though I'd consider "heavy effects" the likes as particles, rainbows, and other colorful eye-raping effects.

Maybe I'll split it and go with the middle. Of course I'll have to spend time and decide on each scene.
