My first AMV...

Post by spk1983 » Wed Jun 03, 2009 11:59 pm

Well, I have been a long time lurker here on a-m-v.org, after about 7 years, I've finally gotten around to doing my first AMV!

I know it's not that great, but considering I've started editing about 2 days ago, I hope I didn't do *too* badly.

Anyway, any comments/opinions will be highly welcome! :D

Haha, isn't it an unwritten rule that no matter what footage you put to this song, it will automatically come out epic as hell with pathos up the wazoo? :P Certainly applies to the potato chips here, don't it!

Well let's see. Actually this was kinda almost the opposite from what I expected - it felt like you're putting in just a little too much editing in sometimes. Some of the rhythmic multi-screen and black-box stuff is quite cool; but in other places some of the effects (like stretches, embosses, distortions and shatters) are somewhere between not really necessary (i.e. wasn't the original footage good enough?) and occasionally plain ugly. There was too many different editing effects here - it's much better to pick a set and stick with them, otherwise you start confusing the viewer; it's hardly likely you'll impress them because these are, of course, standard 'canned' effects that any NLE program will have. I understand the temptation going into a first video - here you have all these cool toys in the editor, why not try them all? But from the viewer's perspective, that's really not very effective. So better to take a few, make sure they look good, and apply them well.

Oh, and the intro/outro were a little too long for my taste

Otherwise makes a cool extended trailer. Nothing terribly unusual, but you certainly have your editing basics down well. Just keep it simple with the effects next time, because aside from that you certainly know how to time and pace things very well. Best of luck.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

*nods*, I was kinda worried I was trying a little too much with the effects, next time I'll be sure to be more selective...

I might do a rework of this one, just to keep things a little simpler...

Thanks for the advice btw :) .

*edit* - I did as suggested, removed some of the unneeded effects...

Question: Is it alright if I request the current video on here is removed, and I upload this new one? Or should I just leave the old one up here and put up the reworked version as well? I just want to make sure I'm not breaking any rules regarding to uploading videos in the org.

it`s me or the opening secuel with the legend "any human who..bla bla" it`s from Sierra Lorna AMV "Seigi"?

:?

btw i think this amv is too "shiny" for this song, selected scenes are not able to created the dark atmosphere this song required :( and the fx doesn´t help :?

and about uploading a new version, read the rules before you do something, it is not allowed to upload something local that is considered a "Beta" version, next time be sure, you are uploading a masterpiece :) or at least a final version :book:

Indeed it is from Sierra Lorna's vid, I did state as such in the video info page.

I was hoping for it to be a final cut, only after getting the input in here, then I realised more work was needed...so...sucks to be me.

Well, I won't upload the revised version just yet, any more comments and suggestions that I can implement directly, so when I'm done, there shall definitely be no more adjustments after that point onwards.

I agree with Nevada, it's a great starting point/first step, which is farther than I've gotten so far. I agree with others that you went way overboard on the effects and that alot didn't work, but your editing style as far as your ideas and your cut sequences show that you have alot of potential. I think if you keep making videos, the more experience you get doing this, you will become a good one.

As for this one, there are a couple of places here and there where the timing is slightly off from where I think you wanted it, and the effects (like the overlays) were too much and actually made it worse. Other than that though, I thought you did a decent job piecing together the sequences and you show some real potential as a video editor. :)

Thanks, nevada and Jazzy, I know I can do much better, I hope my next AMV shows some improvement...it certainly is calling for a greater effort than this one...I've clocked more than double the time of this one with my current project and barely halfway done, hopefully people will like it more, even with virtually zero effects.

When I'm done with that one, I might revisit this one to tinker further before putting it up.

Quick question - where can I put up details with regards to work in progress/beta videos?

This way I can get an idea from others on here, before uploading a final version on here, and not violate any Terms of Service.

I have a working draft currently on YT, so it shouldn't be too difficult to view.

Randomly add people on MSN. Then force them to watch your betas. It's what I do.
