Please observe the following unique rules for this forum:
  • Please limit your new threads (not replies) to one per week. If you have several new videos to announce, create one thread for all the videos. (Note: if you forget one you can edit your post!)
  • Offsite links are allowed, but you are required to have a catalog entry for that video as well. Threads announcing videos that do not contain a catalog entry will be moved to the Awaiting Catalog Entry sub-forum and will be deleted in 2 weeks if an entry is not created.
  • When posting announcements, it is recommended that you include links to the catalog entries (using the video ID) in your post.
  • Videos that do not contain anime are allowed to be announced in the Other Videos section and are not required to have catalog entries.

and as for using downloaded footage the best option is not to... comes with subtitles and the codecs will leave particles and other distortions in your video...

I don't think that's a good idea. That's one of the reasons why DVD ripping is sometimes considered illegal. Besides, it's being a douche bag.

Hypocracy asside, it's actually considered to be okay enough to mention here - as is buying imports, ripping them, and selling the discs to someone else afterwards (what I did with 13 Bleach DVDs in the heads up forum last summer).

That's rather strange. It's practically pirating. Personally, I'll never resort to it unless I'm borrowing someone's DVDs.

I did the Netflix thing as well. To me it makes sense, and it definitely seems like the most reasonable option for people with tight budgets who cant afford to just go out and buy tons of anime DVDs at the drop of a hat. Those things are very pricey you know...of course series I really enjoy I wind up buying, but as for first viewings, Netflix does the trick for me.

It's been illegal to copy movies since people had the ability to copy VHS tapes in their own homes using two VCRs. It's been illegal to reuse movies since a LONG time before AMVs were invented. Having a teacher bring in a videotape that the school didn't buy the rights too (AKA every movie-version of a book ever shown in English classes) is ILLEGAL.

I don't think the fine people at DVD laws land were like "we need to make DVD ripping illegal so those pesky nerds won't get them on Netflix and copy them to make music videos!" That was probably low on their priority list.

Moreover, I personally don't belong to Netflix, I buy the DVDs that I use to make AMVs, and using them for AMVS is just as illegal, and even just as "douche-baggy" even though they are mine. Netflix, and Blockbuster and any other rental chain pays a lot of money for the privillage to rent out a movie. One DVD for Blockbuster costs more to buy than it would you or I in a retail store, because the companies sell them the rights to rent. The companies make their money back, they're not being cheated out of anything.
