You'll find a number of computer science types, too.

Yes, guilty as charged.

Meh. I'm just in high school, but I'm taking college media classes during the summer and after school. I'm doing pretty well, but the level of the class just isn't up to par. I'm in the second level of the class, but I'm pretty sure the newcomers to the site could get through the material. I've talked to the professor several times about information regarding to the technical aspects of digital media, but he always just seems to ignore and tell me I'm too young to truely understand the crap. Screw him.

Anyway, I also am taking high school media courses, which aren't too bad (we just got Final Cut Studio 2.0, and I'm loving it!), and I can work in their lab two days a week in the summer. While my teacher doesn't like AMV's (I did show her Euphoria at one point, trying to convey and idea), she does know what she's talking about, and actually tries to convey the "hip" trends. While I don't think we will get into compression this year (my Senior one, woohoo!), I'm sure we will get into some audio editing, which I am looking forward to. Though the idea of learning Photoshop (when I'm already proficient with it) just isn't appealing to me this year.

Well, i live in Australia, concerning my Amv'ing, ive improved a lot, im looking into going to a acting/production academy, to do some stuff there with the production side, as im quite good with graphic design and being an amv editor helps as well, im still in high school, its my final year, im doing me HSC which i think is equivelant to SAT or something in America.

So yeah, this is just like an add on question, would having experience with video editing programs further my chance to getting into the field? because i feel like ive got a head start infront of other guys?

I'm currently finishing school and aim for studying something like communicational design at either a normal uinversity or an art one. since the study more and more takes video and fx into account I figured that'd be a rather easy thing to do for me, also since I'm a pretty good drawer...
Most of the time you need portfolios for that kind of stuff so I'm doing a lot of free style stuff in AE and in drawings (tho not specifically for the portfolio)...
I'm not trying to make some kind of career, I try to keep my social participation low so it would be rather logical to do sth where your abilities come in handy.
(I'm in germany btw, berlin for fucking location paradise ;p)

Some people will say that your hobby will help you when you apply to school.

I, however, am convinced that (in the case of US universities and colleges) your hobby will be a significant stigma on your application: an indication of your disrespect for draconian copyright restrictions, disregard for capital-A Artists, support of terrorism and Al-Qaeda in particular, knowledge of IEDs, etc.

I'd leave AMVs out of the picture, unless you can be sure that it won't come back to bite you in the ass.

Thanks for the great responses guys :o Now I'll go over the information again in order to understand everything to the fullset xD

I said US/EU only because of language restrictions -_-

And yes, if I had cheated on my SAT results, I would have a higher score :P

trythil, thanks for your warning :)

You guys really gave me some interesting hints and extra info.

if you want to be an editor for film or television, i have some suggestions.

INTERN INTERN INTERN!!!

look around your neighborhood for a post production company. if you dont find one, then go to your local news station. email them, phone them, or just walk up to the front desk and ask about internships for editing.

you CAN get a degree in something that has to do with editing- i'm getting an AA degree in media technology- but why waste the money? if you start interning soon, you'll rise the ranks enough to be at a degree level entry job BEFORE you would otherwise get out of school.

you're gonna have to do a lot of free jobs before you start getting paid, but once you work up a work sample AND you start to build up a network of friends and mentors in the industry (this is probably more important then a work sample. i cant stress enough how important networking is), and as long as you have the will to work, you'll do fine.
