Openings and Endings?

Post by meleechampion » Wed May 16, 2007 8:01 pm

I was wondering what everybody's opinion was on using anime openings and endings in AMVs.

To me they seem overused, maybe in reality they're not, but having seen the same footage over and over again just by watching the anime itself makes it feel that way.

Nevermind the fact that most AMVs aren't from DVD (textless OP and ED) sources and thus contain the credits, if not karaoke subtitles... making them ugly.

What are your thoughts?

They're footage :|

I don't mind, really. As long as these are justified and good.
Depends on the show, too. Many (good) Haruhi videos use a lot of opening/ending footage quite successfully for example, since it's really some of the best animation in the show and there's no reason not to.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

If I see the haruhi closing get using in a video one more time I'm going to start going on a murderous rampage in the AMV at AWA. Which I was probably going to do anyway but it's nice to have an excuse.

They're perfectly fine to me... I usually skip past intro /endings when watching stuff anyways, so it really doesn't matter to me. =/

as long as it is actually edited and text-free it's fine by me.
using an op/ed sequence unedited is about as bad as [unjustified] footage reuse
and having the credits text in it is just as bad as subs

I personally don't mind. Sometimes it's quite useful.
But on the other hand, considering openings are sometimes of far better quality than the episodes themselves, it kinda gives the AMV an inconsistent feeling, if used improperly.

But hey, it's all good.

Since it's usually a given that the open/close footage is some of the best in the series, using that footage in an amv is no different from using the best scenes in from the *actual* show. It's the reason certain episodes and fights get reused in every single video for some action anime. The reason certain kissy face-stroking scenes are reused in every single Loveless video (even the multi-anime vids that only feature a few seconds of Loveless use those exact same scenes).

If you don't like seeing the best scenes from an anime used in multiple vids you can only watch your own vids (and make sure you only use the worst scenes in the anime) or you can close your eyes when those familiar frames start flashing by. I doubt many people would willingly use everything but the best scenes from a series. So you're pretty much stuck getting used to it.

Me, if I get tired of seeing those good scenes in every single vid for the anime, I'll just stop downloading vids for that anime for a while. Works every time. ^^;

As for credits... Don't download vids from people who use subtitled footage. Stick with recent vids from people who promise high quality footage and you'll never catch even a glimpse of text in a vid. If they know how to properly rip a dvd, they probably know how to fix or avoid subtitles. I can ignore subtitles if I like the video itself, but it's still rare for me to run into a vid that has them.
