Good anime films to watch?
I've been slightly bored as of late... I work fourty hours a week (like most of the rest of the world) and have wanted to watch some anime... But, considering my schedule, do not have the time to start an ENTIRE anime series... Not that I don't WANT to, I just feel it would be a lot less time consuming, and more rewarding, if I watched some good anime films...
So...
Any ideas?
I love hayao miyazaki films... And I'll pretty much watch just about any anime... (meaning I don't care if it's scary, cute, bloody, sexy, ect.) ...I don't want any hentai films... So if you're going to mention some, please refrain... Anyway, thanks to anyone who posts! I appreciate it!

Re: Good anime films to watch?
I disagree that watching an anime film is "more rewarding" than watching a series. Trying to introduce characters and set up any significant devlopment in just 90-120 minutes is difficult and most movies don't really pull it off.tukoyomislash wrote:But, considering my schedule, do not have the time to start an ENTIRE anime series... Still, if you're not up for a 24 ep series, then try some shorter ones. There are plenty out there and you only have to dedicate about 25 minutes a day to them, rather than a hour or two.
On topic, though, I agree with most of the suggestions here. You ought to try Akira and Spriggan, too, if you haven't seen them yet.

Some great anime movies that don't get mentioned enough.
A Tree of Palm: Excellent animation, hard to believe it is all cell animation, it has a great story based on Pinochio in some ways.
Millenium Actress: A really well done story line, shown from a different perspective. This is in Japanese with subtitles. A different story of lost loves.
Tokyo Godfathers: A hillarious and touching story of three homeless people who find a baby in the trash on Christmas eve. Japanese with subtitles, I think a dub would ruin this one. The stories of the three peoples lives and their search for the baby's mother is great.
Voices of a Distant Star: A very short movie, but very meaningful. If your sentimental, prepare to get a crying towel. A wonderful use of time and distance in a scifi film.
The Place Promised in our Early Days: Another great Movie by the people that did voices. The animation in these two is superb. This is a longer story, again a love story, centered around a a giant tower, promise, a war, and a sleeping girl.
Kakurenbo: Short but amazing cgi anime. A great story of hide and seek wthe demons. Nice horror stuff.
Memories: Three short stories on one disc, Magnetic rose alone is worth the cost of the disc.
Petshop of Horrors: Several stories centered around an exotic pet shop, good stuff.
Early Reigns: Fast fun old west show, cute and tough girls take on the bad guys on a hijaked train. Not great, just a fun movie.

Well, There are lots more to add.
I'd say go with whatever you can find of Hayao Miyazaki movies, including:
Laputa- Castle in the Sky
Nausicaä of the Valley of Wind
Princes Mononoke
Kiki's Delivery Service
And other Studio Ghibli productions
Others, you can try:
Armitage III
Jin-Roh
Blood:The last Vampire
And coming up soon (can't wait to see it):
Tales from Earthsea
There's also the OVAs like:
Develman (will leave you wanting more)
Any Kenshin OVA
Patlabor
Want More???

Some that haven't been mentioned yet
Lupin III - Castle of Cagliostro - Easily one of Miyazaki's most underrated films over here (not distributed by Disney since Monkey Punch's copyright takes precedence...but Manga's got it over here, so it's not too hard to find)
Grave of the Fireflies - WILL depress the Hell out of you, but nevertheless, a movie worth seeing at least once
Perfect Blue - Possibly Satoshi Kon at his most disturbing, this movie is still one of the creepiest I've seen in quite some time and also surreal enough to get the grey matter churning...
(While not a movie so much as a six-ep OVA, at about 2 and a half hours, worth recommending)
Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket - Another sad one, but still very well done (probably the best of the Gundam OVAs)
(On this note, if you ever feel so inclined, the Mobile Suit Gundam movie trilogy is one of the few cases of a compilation movie that works as a worthy substitution for the TV series (...it helped that the series had quite a bit of fat to trim...but I digress))

Spirited Away - one of my personal favorites. i like the more down to Earth ones instead of futuristic fighting and what not.
