As usual, I have to post first on an announcement thread before anyone else will consider it...
Seriously, people. I'm not the only one with a cable modem. Take a chance on a video every once in a while.
With that complaint to the general public aside, I
did, in fact, watch your video, and found it to be relatively unique, despite the overused game. So, here are my thoughts on it...
Stuff I Liked
- the concept. You call it a "normal Squall and Rinoa vid," but this is different from others. You depicted them as a couple trying to overcome all odds, rather than "OMGI<3U!!!!1!!!1Squalzz0rz" like most videos do. Also, the villians were seen more as hinderances to the relationship, rather than the usual "going to destroy the world" persona. So, rather than the typical cheezy romance video that I've grown accustomed to seeing from FFVIII projects, I saw more of "let's do our best to be in love, despite the circumstances" type of video. That paragraph had a lot of quotes... ~_~ Well, you get the gist of it, anyway.
- the constant aspect ratio. FFVIII is one of those games where most of the best scenes are at the end. Unfortunately, the end is in a different format than the rest of the game. Most people just say f**k it and deal with it as it is. You took that extra step and evened it out. Thank you. It really makes a difference in your overall product.
- the music choice. This was what gave your concept strength, I think. Seal's music is...interesting. You'll hear it on the radio, but it's not exactly mainstream. So, it makes for equally interesting videos. It's music that many people know, but it's not overused. Of course, with the overabundance of "Kiss From a Rose" videos, it's refreshing to see something else. Anyway, the point I'm trying to make is that the song is not only unique, but it really works for your video. It gives it a completely surreal feeling - much different from other VIII videos. It reminds me of
this one.
Stuff I Was Iffy About
- the image quality. It wasn't the best, and I imagine it would be pretty bad at full screen (I wouldn't know, I don't watch videos at full screen). It wasn't awful, but could stand some improvement for sure.
- beat sync. You know, I can tell that you have a good sense of timing, because you nailed every important/transistion beat with a white flash. However, there were several points in the video where I just felt it drag, particularly at the beginning of the video with Squall and the feather. Still, there were other points that I really liked. I especially enjoyed the "trippy" drum interlude at about two thirds of the way through the video.
Stuff I Didn't Like
- Final Fantasy VIII. Okay, so this is a personal preference, but I really don't care for that installment out of the series. It is by far my least favorite. I try not to let the impact on my viewing experience, but it is something to know.
- use of the opening fight scene. The first time you used it (around 1:40) was good, but the second time (around 2:14) just seemed unneccesary. You always have to be careful with an overused scene like that. To a person like me, who has seen literally hundreds (actually, probably a few thousand) FF videos, I get bored quick when I see a scene that is oft-used in videos. I'm sure that others feel the same.
All in all, it was pretty good. It was worth the download, the viewing, and the time it took to type all this up, to be honest. I enjoyed it, and I fully intend to peek in on some of the other stuff in your profile. Well done! ^_^
As always, Farewell, Good Luck, and Happy AMV-ing!
