Blue Outline. inspired by the wasteland

Post by bum » Wed Oct 27, 2004 11:38 am

This is the first video I've released in a long time. I've made a few others before but I iether didnt complete them for some reason or another, or they were school projects which I didnt upload because the ones I did for school projects and were generaly too violent for the org.

But finaly I've finished something I can put on the org. And thankfully, something which I'm proud of. This amv is inspired/influenced by otohiko's the Wasteland. Specificaly its inspired by the third segment of that amv. What what i originaly had in mind was a landscape type amv, with a few emotional scenes of actual characters along the way. What i ended up doing was a sad/emotional type amv that, while not having a specific theme, conveys a sence of sadness throught the film. I didnt build up the scenes to get progresively sadder, I just aimed to keep a constant pace throught the vid. I did have a bit of a hiccup though with the pacing, and that was with the use of effects. when i first done the complete beta, at least half the effects didnt realy add anything to the flow or mood of the vid. But I worked through them when doing the final edits of the video, and ended up changing alot of the effects. Theirs still a scene or two I'm not sure about but Im happy with the final result. .

One thing I love about this video is my method of obtaining and using source footage, and proof that my method works. i used divx files. Ripped whole vob's and converted them to a low quality divx files (70-95MB, optimised for fast encoding, not quality) which i edited with. Done all my editing with divx files and nothing els. This is something thats frowned on by amv'ers (and probably by other video editors). But it worked. By swaping the divx files with the original vob's after i had finished editing, i prety much have a perfect quality amv made using low quality divx. Ok so the video's quality isnt perfect but considering i didnt use any avs/vdub filers, or any video cleaning filters at all, im happy with how it looks. The thing is, my method works. And it allows me to easily put my whole anime colection on my hard disk for editing.

One final thing, Thanks to Otohiko for beta testing and giving me advice on this amv. i apreciate it. And thanks to AbsoluteDestiny for the xvid guide in the beta Read ErMaC & AbsoluteDestiny's Friendly AMV Guides. It saved me alot of frustration that i was having after trying (failing) to do a final render for this vid with divx, wmv9 and mpeg.

(note. just for laughs, i got disconected from the ftp server 30 times wile uploading :P . seriosl)

The only time people have a problem with editing with Divx files is when you then encode with them after you finish editing. The switching method is even suggested in Ermac and AD's guide (though with a different codec for good reason).

I watched your video, it was fairly good. I didn't care for the effects, but I realize the video needed something for those beats. You had a pretty good choice of scene selection (much better than effects selection :P ) Some of your scene changes were barely off the beat, but most of it was well placed.

What i did was, after finalising my edits i encoded the file into huffyuv and then did i final encode with xvid in vdubmod. If i wanted to clean up my footage more before encoding the huffyuv i could have loaded vdubmod filters into vegas and applied them to whatever clips needed them (vegas can use vdub filters like normal effects. though i dont think they're keyframeable) . i know thier were some scenes with a bit of interlacing, but overall im proud of the video quality and that the divx/vob method ive mentioned so many times here actualy worked (yes, all thoughs times i talked about it before, i never actualy tried it till a few days ago with this vid).

Enjoyable, at the very least. It was atmospheric and moody, which I like, and the editing was decent but could have been better. Overall, pretty good.

Heh, no need to mention me so explicitly

I'm still resolving my bandwith issues, so hopefully I'll see the final version soon enough....

Granted, I very much approved of the test/beta run you sent me, and even if you haven't done anything to it since, it's bound to be a really good video with a lot of ambience. I've been calling on people to do more of these, and I'm glad at least some are - these kinds of videos are highly underrated as a genre.

Wow, it looks pretty different in full-quality, for some odd reason. Still just as odd/interesting though. It's definitely on the right track as far as mood and editing sync; the effects, for the most part, are fine if you ask me. There is a couple of bits which are sort of 'out of nowhere' and have no real parrallels elsewhere, which makes them sort of confusing, but other than that I don't really have a problem with the piano keys or overlays. Oh yea, and I think there's a few somewhat obvious interlacing issues...

I'd say, well-done. I would have approached editing a video like this slightly differently, but I'll be the first to say that I want to see more videos along these lines in the future.

Unique and different from usual AMVs.
Noticed some interlacing.
Other than that, it was weird.
Which is good, by the way.
I dont feel weird often.
