How much space do you have?

Post by Kionon » Thu Mar 01, 2007 10:25 pm

Because of editing, I have a ridiculous amount of space, and I find it way the heck too easy to fill with vobs, lossless copies, betas, etc. So how much space do you have? How much space do you feel we as editors need? Is there a point at which more is just ridiculous?

Here's what I have:

That's more than half a terabyte.

I have three internal hard drives, a grand total of 400 GB. It's more than enough than I need - right now I have clips for like three or four AMVs lying around, with a load of space to spare. Although, to be fair, I don't keep the VOBs on my hard drive after I've clipped them.

Also, I try not to crowd up my hard drives with downloaded videos. I always end up burning them to CDs, which helps conserve space as well.

Still, each of my HDDs is more than half-full. I personally think 500 GB should be fine for any editor, and it's feasable that even something like 100-200 GB is enough, as long as you don't work on more than one video at a time. Heck, I know people that edit with <100 GB hard drives, so many of us probably don't NEED a lot of space.

Sure is nice to have, though.

Free space? Or total?

C:\ 232GB, 19.5GB free (needs to be cleaned a bit)
D:\ 465GB, 22.5GB free (contains a giant quantity of ripped DVDs for a project, ATM)

I also have an external enclosure with a 160GB (~145GB) drive that is used for backing up files now (not currently connected).

My laptop (which I use most of the year) has an 80GB drive
on top of that I have 2 120GB externals (both WD)
so that comes to...320GB (I neglect my 512MB and 128MB flash drives)

my desktop back home has 2 37.6GB drives (raid 0...but it acts like 1 37.6GB drive) and a generic 250GB drive

so I technically have 600.64GB at my disposal with my current setup.

I only require ~30GB free to feel unrestricted (24GB to store vobs+d2vs+avs, 5GB for lossless clips and 1GB for an uncompressed export)...realistically, I don't think any editor (amv editor that is) should need more than 100GB...but that depends on the length of the amvs made.

160G. I don't generally work on more than one or two projects at a time.

So how many inches is that?

Three external harddrives at 120 GB each and 2 computers with 40 GB on one and 80 GB on the other makes it a grand total of 480 GB. Just shy of half a terabyte
