The Guides page has at least two guides that cover DVD ripping (and one of them also covers capturing from VHS or laserdisc, if you're so inclined).

In terms of ideas, I'm set. Not that I have every scene of the entire video mapped already, I mean, I just know what types of clips to put in which parts of the song, and I have a vague idea of the progression of the clip.

I'm in the same boat as unspoken though... the tech side of it all leaves my brain fuzzy. I need to read through the guides a few more times and cull some of the overly techie parts, at least to figure out a basic procedure to get my clips onto my comp. :?

What program(s) are you using?
Making an amv, is rather like being the director of a Broadway show, where you have a million dancers and each of them only knows one step.

I downloaded the AMVapp last night and installed that. From what I read in the guides, and what I see in the suite, it's got pretty much everything... as in, too much. LOL

Is there something a little more simple that I could start with first?

I've got some anime (more coming, and more still in my Amazon.ca cart) and plenty of music (no Linkin' Park though, I promise). I also DL'ed a DVD decrypter last night... All that's left is a video editor. Anyone have suggestions for one that's simple enough for a n00b?

For the love of god! please dont say n00b its annoying. Please say something like noob, noobie or Mr.NoobMcdoenthaveafuckingclue.

Mr.NoobMcdoenthaveafuckingclue is the most effective. :D

Most of the best editors here are hobbyists and those that put them into contests. We just get better by experience and having people comment on our videos. :D

Oh, gee, that explains why I suck at editing, then. Language major! XD
