Maybe a limit to uploading videos?

Post by Brolly345 » Wed Mar 16, 2005 2:31 pm

This was just A though that crossed my mind when I looked at how many videos have been uploaded a day for this week and the not so distant past. I figured just an extremely rough average on how much time we have until "Kero" fills up.

If there are about 80 videos uploaded a day, which is about where it is right now, and each video is about 50MB. (I realise this is rough I'm just cutting a middleground) Then that makes 4GB a day put onto "Kero". Now correct me if I'm wrong but "Kero" has 2TB of space right? So that leaves us about 50 days before it fils up, give or take a few days, at the rate people are uploading.

Unless you guys have money for yet another server here in the next two months I would hope that you consider revising the rules to be a lot pickier when it comes to locally hosting videos. Now what those rules would be I don't know. It's mostly up to you admins and mods, but it's just a thought that crossed my mind.

The point of this thread is so maybe the members can help come up with suggestions on how the rules for uploading should be modified, if they can be, and how the uploads should be limited.

The harsh reality is we are quickly running out of time again... :(

Pardon me, but 4 GB/day times 50 days = 200 GB != 2 TB.

So I think what you meant to say is that we have about 500 days before Kero fills up. :D

Yeah, uh, that's what I meant...

Thanks for the correction. So I should be saying within the next year to year an a half for the new server.

Damn, I should have put more thought into the math.

Also, the average is definitely lower than 50mb per video.

Isn't it lower than 20mb? There's alot of videos that are around 5mb.

I don't see an immediate need for this unless future donations are likely to fall off and we want to plan ahead.

In that case, a total upload limit (per year, or per creator) would be good so long as we get the freedom to delete old vids so we can upload newer ones. Sort of like throwing away old library books when you can't afford a bigger library.

If I could see the average I would have gone smaller. Couldn't find that bit of information. I just see most videos, that are .avi at least, that are a lot bigger than 20MB.

But then I'm realising I made an ass of myself posting this.

Carry on...

I don't think so.

Maybe in 2003 I saw a lot of 5-15 mb rm files, but most of the new vids I've seen in the last year (late 2004 into 2005) are either 50-60mb wmvs or 50-95mb xvid files. :(

I ran some numbers on recent uploads, and the average is around 30 -- at least for those uploaded in the last two days that come up on a search for "new downloads". I would not be surprised if the overall distribution is indeed heavy-tailed to a significant degree.

Sample size: 37
Average: 30 MB
High: 69.1 MB
Low: 4.8 MB
Range breakdown:
- 0-10 MB: 5
- 10-20 MB: 7
- 20-30 MB: 7
- 30-40 MB: 8
- 40-50 MB: 6
- 50-60 MB: 2
- 60-70 MB: 2

This is a small sample, but the trending looks accurate. With these numbers, at current rates, Kero will not be full until 2.33 years after initial activation (probably sooner due to inevitably increasing local upload rates).
