Even though only one of my videos fits either of the new categories, many thanks! :D

Excellent. Every romance/drama vid I've made has sentimental value to it. Lots of updating to do. ;p

The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

should we attempt to define categories?
i saw several different definitions of sentimental in the suggestion thread.
"whiny romantics"
"affectedly or extravagantly emotional"
"weakly emotional, mawkishly susceptible or tender."
"characterized by...refined feeling."
"Sentimental just means that it incites an emotion positive or *negative*"
from the VCAs

Best Drama Video wrote:Some videos are out there soley for the purposes of making you laugh, others are out there to give you an extra jolt of adrenline, but there are also videos that will make you cry, or feel things you don't on an every day basis. Drama is an important part of what makes AMVs truely a form of art. This catagory is for videos that have captured a feeling or an emotion and conveyed it extremely well.

my main point is we need to distinguish sentimental, romance, serious, and drama. not to say the current standpoints on these categories are equal. however, sentimental seems to be inclusive of romance and drama (can you have a non-sentimental romance or drama?), and serious seems to be inclusive of drama (perhaps with a few rare exceptions). otherwise every drama automatically gets categorized as serious and sentimental as well.

furthermore, using emotion in the definition of sentimental might be too broad as the purpose of art (in this case, our amvs) is to appeal to emotion. in effect, every video is sentimental (or intended to be sentimental) on some level.

anyone have good definitions for the different categories?

Romance = interaction between two characters that shows attraction and interest in each other. Can be angsty, touching or comedic. Should be easy to spot when you see it.

Drama = angsty

Comedy/Upbeat = makes you laugh or it's just a lot of fun to watch.

Sentimental = not funny or angsty. It doesn't have to be romantic but it can still tug at your heartstrings. Like a relationship between siblings or parent to child or good friends.

At least that's how I would define them anyway.

Great additions, I must say.

Although the definition of 'sentimental' may be very different
from each creator's perspective, and I don't know how we'll go
about that?
Making a clear definition for sentimental will surely
make it easier to categorize, but it can be translated into,
oh so many feelings.

But perhaps that's why it's a great category. Broad yes, but a lot of us can agree that it is a category...we just all define it as something different. The last one downwithpants mentioned was mine ;). It was the description we had in AWA Pro and seems to correlate with the dictionary definition.

However, you're right...it is different to all creators. So I guess it's up to each of us if we categorize our vid as that...which is how it is right now. Just click :P.

the problem is, what video doesn't attempt to incite an emotion, positive or negative?

Personally I will continue to use "drama" or "romance" instead of the new "dramance," 'cause I don't see the point. (PS. Drama != angsty. Where did that assumption come from? Seen the Oscars lately? Drama == serious.)

Still don't see how "instrumental" refers to the AMV editing, and not the music. "Rock" isn't an AMV genre, after all.

...but this is just a choice; if everyone else sees a vast difference I'm not going to rain on your parade, and the Powers That Be Have Spoken(tm). I'm just a bit befuddled about it.
