Help needed buying a DV camera.

Hi all.

I'm looking to buy a good DV camera for under $400. It must be able to take good looking photo's (about 2-5 megapixels) and be used for fvideo editing if at all possible. Canon would be nice.

If not then any suggestions for a good camera ?

While i'm on the topic I've heard rumors of a DVD player that can play DivX video files. Does anybody have some information on that ?

I don't think that you can get a dv-cam with photo function for that price.

Yes, there are lots of divx players around, kiss is a label for example that build such players.

agree with herber
there are no camcorders under $400 that will let you take 2.5 megapixel pictures
furthermore, getting a camcorder that can EVEN take pictures is considered very good for a price under $400
if you want good quality pictures to come with the camcorder, you'll have to pay higher (for 2.5 megapixel pictures i'd say at the least $500 and up)

You're probably best off not expecting great things out of a MiniDV camera as far as still pictures go unless you're willing to spend far more money than necessary. If you're looking for still pictures of that level, you should be able to get a regular digital camera for less than the $400, but you're not going to get a MiniDV that will do that. There are some good MiniDV camcorders around that price... my TRV-22 wasn't too much more than $400. It doesn't take really high-res pictures, but takes beautiful video and has Analog/Digital passthrough capability, which is probably what most of us are concerned with in IEEE1394-capable camcorders anyway...
