Dunno about overused, but certainly gratuitous:

threshold
(technically, this is threshold+gaussian, but straight threshold makes the picture really look like shit)
difference/edgefind
(again, difference plus some other stuff)
video as texture on 3D objects
This one also demonstrates pseudocoloring and a few other abuses of picture.
colorize/sepiatone
(This one shows the use of colorize to produce a color not associated with normal monochrome film.)

Most of these are just filters or combinations fo filters rather than real "effects", but so is grayscaling, and it made the initial list.

i made a guy disapear once, it's really easy, just make a copy without that model in it and fade to it.
through like 2 projects (one spinning and one floating away, too bad premeir doesn't combine the two!!) I made a top-like effect

"Fake 3D"...as in, moving flat pictures around in 3 dimensions.
