How can it not play everything well? There are a slew of options to even deinterlace, blend frames, and adjust the footage as you are watching. I'm also fumbled by some of these MP4 sync issues too, it's a first really.

VLC 2.0 and following is better than what it used to be (it used to be, quite frankly, shitty), but it still has a number of issues. It still lacks at least a couple features and does not support all formats.
A better solution while still staying outside of directshow would be mplayer2, which is what the conplayer Quu is doing is based on.
