  • Comments: My Deer Friend Nokotan, or as it's known by its Japanese name, Shikanoko Nokonoko Koshitantan (repeats at least three times), is one of those titles that people were talking about during the Summer 2024 season. It also was rather polarizing, as some people enjoy the show, while others gave up after a few episodes. While I myself liked it, I can see why some people would drop it, as:

    1. The marketing for the series oversells the comedic nature of the show (be it the second trailer featuring some of the crazier moments of the show's first half or that hour long viral video), with people expecting it to be more in line with either Nichijou or Pop Team Epic.

    2. It does take four episodes to introduce the main cast, with episode 4 being rather lacking comedy wise as most of the focus is on Koshitan interacting with her fellow student council members.

    3. To be honest, Koshitan is not a good straight guy character, as the show tries too hard to focus on her being weirded out by Nokotan's antics than giving her character development concerning her dark past. Heck, there's a couple of bits where it feels like she's only there just for the sake of her reactions, which aren't really necessary to convey the humor.

Arguments about the show's humor content aside: while it was airing, I was searching "deer songs" for possible tunes I could use to set Nokotan to, and I happen to stumble upon a System of a Down song about police brutality on peaceful protesters that would feel like an odd choice if it weren't for the fact that the name of the song is "Deer Dance". This, combined with me already thinking of setting the opening riff to the OP dance, led the idea of taking the deer portion of the song title a little too literally and using it to showcase the insanity of Nokotan, and with AWA moving to December in 2024, I made it my Accolades project this year.

While the instrumental parts were more loose, as I worked on the lyrics portions, I tried to keep in mind the original "weak being abused by the police" premise of the song, with the project eventually evolving into having almost anything deer-related (and Bashame) in the role of the oppressed victims, with Nokotan serving as the representative for their side. Thankfully, the final quarter of the series helped a lot with the concept (with episode 11 having a spoof of the "Hail Zeon" scene from Gundam, episode 12 featuring a hunter trying to kill Nokotan, and the finale involving various real life deer-based mascots and a plot in which Nokotan is threatened to be returned back into the HQ where they are supposed to be trained at).
