Given the pathetic nature of Shinji Ikari, I had a couple of ideas in my head for comedy AMV's that mock this aspect of Shinji, with one of song choices I was considering was "Deteriorata", as it had a refrain in which the person listening to the song is referred to as "a fluke of the universe", a line that would fit Shinji perfectly. Actual editing of this idea came when I was thinking about what to do for Otakon 2024. Thinking about a couple of various source AMV's that came out the previous year, I considered doing that, with me thinking of various "list songs" I could use. Among the songs I considered was "Desiderata", the poem that "Deteriorata" is a spoof of. It is there that I was reminded of the "Deteriorata" idea, with it leading to that being my Otakon 2024 project.

Whereas I started work on my Otakon projects early on (as in December of the previous year), editing for this project started later than usual, as I was also focused on making clips for AMV Hell 8. Between figuring out which scenes would work for each segment (with me regularly changing things around as I edit) the masking and lip sync that would go into this project, the decision to upgrade Vegas in the middle of the project, and the usual conflict of "editing vs. other interests", an initial version of the video wasn't ready until about a week before the Otakon deadline, and even then, there were some elements that I felt needed improvement (one change I did make in time for the deadline, another that I didn't add until the deadline expired) and one scene that was questionable for legal reasons (with me making a lawyer-friendly version to deal with this problem), and that's not including the stuff I planned to add in the online version of the video. In other words, production for this video was kinda like the actual making of Evangelion, only less hectic.
