After completing my Tears for Fears AMV for Cowboy Bebop, my friend gave me a copy of the Cowboy Bebop movie, Knockin' on Heaven's Door. As I was watching it, I was caught off guard by what seemed to be a clear reference to Pink Floyd's song Time. Pretty much everything about it was a nod to the famous clock chime intro, and it was perfect. Immediately I felt the impulse to make an AMV for it, and as I continued the movie I would get ideas here and there, though I would try to restrain myself to focus on the movie. Looking around later, I was surprised to find that there wasn't anything on this Pink Floyd reference, even though there was plenty about the On the Run reference for Mad Pierrot's episode in the series.
When I was done with the movie I got right to work on the intro. And then a couple hours pass and I've already got to the guitar solo. Then by the next day I had most of the video done. Because it was a movie (and I have worked with two other movies before) I knew it would be best to keep to the plot somehow without getting too heady. Actually it seems like AMVs are easier to make with movies, because there isn't hours and hours of footage like you would get with a normal series.
And then once I got to the end of Time I noticed it was kind of awkward to end Time at the scene where Spike is lying down near Bull's fire, so I decided to add clips from the series of Bull. And woah! What a great opportunity for Great Gig in the Sky! When I first started that, I thought of taking an experimental route and overlaying different clips (of space and violence) on top of a scrolling background image of space from Cowboy Bebop; like the credits in "Rain Man" with photos placed on the side of the frame, etc. But a friend of mine suggested doing a full overlay and cropping to 16:9. That seemed to work out well. And I found more and more clips to add on which made the video so much more intense and expressive. Similarly, it was only a day or so before I was finished with most of the AMV, because I was super into it. Every day I would have the songs stuck in my head after some deeply focused editing. All that was left was to do some final polishing and change a few clips out. And as soon as it's uploaded, I'm off to the mountains for a 3 month retreat to forget all about it.
Overall, although these aren't the most "original" in the sense of having a complicated concept or editing style, I'm pleased with the way they both came out. My priority was to make something enjoyable to watch that went with the music. And for Great Gig I am still amazed at how much emotion goes into the singing, and how that can be complemented by simple visual edits.
