  • Comments: I had the idea for this music video after listening to this song one day and realizing how well it would go with the anime Cowboy Bebop. At that time it had been a while since I watched the show, so I decided I would need to do a re-watch to get some good ideas, though really the ideas would come to me fairly frequently and I would feel really excited to get to work.

Whereas in my Evangelion AMVs I would create them with a specific idea or concept in mind and then painstakingly look for clips to try and illustrate those themes in a narrative way, this time I thought that since Cowboy Bebop is much more episodic, I thought I would just make the AMV while I watched the series, maybe one episode a day or so, without establishing a tight narrative. I think it worked pretty well. I ended up basically taking up the whole length of the song halfway through the series, so once I got to episode 13 I cleared most of my Vegas timeline to see how I can try and fill the newly empty gaps with material from the second half of the show, and gradually I got what we have here. Overall it was fairly relaxed and an enjoyable way to make the AMV, which was good since I was fairly busy with work at the time. However, there was a point where I was working on it every day, watching it every day to see how things were going, that I became somewhat numb to it and had to put it down for a week or two. I found this pretty helpful, since by the time I started (spontaneously) working on my next AMV for Cowboy Bebop, my memory of this one was pretty hazy and I got to see it with fairly fresh eyes.

Key themes that came to mind were the fact that in some way, every character in the show is trying to "rule the world" - if not the whole external world, then their own bubble of it, or their own internal world. Although my intention wasn't to explore this as a sort of narrative theme, I wanted to reference it simply by trying to put as much as the show in as tight a space as possible, in a way that I thought would compliment the lyrics of the song, and where hopefully this theme would appear on its own, along side other themes depending on which clips I put near each other. There's the fact that the crew on the Bebop live a rather mundane life outside of bounty hunting and in a way they've resigned themselves to it; that some characters are "turning their backs on nature," that others "almost made it" but "had to fade it," etc. Since I felt different emotional resonances with each part of the song, I would try to bring that out in the video by choosing clips a bit carefully and not sticking with any single character arc, etc. A couple of times I had a pretty hard time letting certain arcs go. And in fact we see that Asimov and Katerina appear fairly frequently. There's also the theme of loss, friendship, frustration and disenchantment, etc that seems to manifest in different ways (not to get into too much detail...).

And of course there's the intro... Really, I wanted a way to introduce the song on a serious but lighthearted note. It's something the show accomplishes really well which I find amazing.
