Part 2 of 3 in a series of AMVs exploring the human experience.
This video was originally conceived many years ago(probably 10?). As with my previous video "Ebb and Flow", I had a handful of AMVs that were roughly assembled or halfway complete sitting on an old editing rig. This concept was one of them.
During this time in quarantine I began digging through some old hard drives. I saw a couple folders worth of project files and I got all nostalgic. I reloaded the footage and sequences into Premiere and was curious how much was left to finish. After a few error fixes and clip replacement workarounds I was ready to roll. To my surprise, two of the three videos were probably 40 or 50% done and the third was basically just a song with some random clips scattered about the sequence.
This video was actually finished last in the series even though it was in a more complete state when I reopened the project files.
Continuing with the Radiohead/Thom Yorke theme I chose "Hearing Damage", which was this great single off of the Twilight: New Moon soundtrack. I'm not a fan of the movie but this song is one of those that just wraps itself around your brain and won't leave. It had this terrible dark futuristic vibe to it that really conveyed this tension I wanted the next video to feel.
Ghost in the Shell became the anime weapon of choice early on. I've always wanted to use GITS in an AMV and it was clear to me that the anime was introspective and deep enough to convey this feeling of anxiety I needed to get across. There are so many incredible cinematic shots in the film that allow you to pause and reflect. The Major is a great platform for human expression, which is ironic.
Each video takes on another level of the human emotional journey. After the first one took a plunge into fear, uncertainty, and coming to grips with a problem. I wanted this video to explore the problem, realize that nothing is changing, and channel that fear into action. Often this action can be riddled with anxiety, but ultimately we need to stop letting the world control us and do our best to live life.
"Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light."
