This is it - the best, and last, video I'll ever be able to make using Windows Movie Maker. It took eight months from the first inspiration to the final save (and god, the crashes, the crashes!), but it's finally finished. The lyrics play an important part, so here ya go...

It started with a low light
Next thing I knew they ripped me from my bed
And then they took my blood type
It left a strange impression in my head

You know that I was hoping
that I could leave this star-crossed world behind
But when they cut me open
I guess I changed my mind

And you know I might have just flown too far
    from the floor this time,
cause they're calling me by my name

And their zipping white light beams
    disregarding bombs and satellites
And that was the turning point
    That was one lonely night

The Star Maker says it ain't so bad
The Dream Maker's gonna make you mad
The Spaceman says everybody look down
    it's all in your mind

But now I'm back at home and
I'm looking forward to this life I live
You know it's gonna haunt me
So hesitation to this life I give

You think you might cross over
You're caught between the Devil and the deep blue sea
    You better look it over
    before you make that leap

    And you know I'm fine
but I hear those voices at night sometimes
    They justify my claim

And the public don't dwell on my transmission
    cause it wasn't televised
But it was a turning point
    Oh what a lonely night

The Star Maker says it ain't so bad
The Dream Maker's gonna make you mad
The Spaceman says everybody look down
    it's all in your mind

The Star Maker says it ain't so bad
The Dream Maker's gonna make you mad
The Spaceman says everybody look down
    it's all in your mind

My global position systems are vocally addressed
They say the Nile used to run from east to west
They say the Nile used to run
    from east to west

    I'm fine
but I hear those voices at night
    sometimes

The Star Maker says it ain't so bad
The Dream Maker's gonna make you mad
The Spaceman says everybody look down
    it's all in your mind

The Star Maker says it ain't so bad
The Dream Maker's gonna make you mad
The Spaceman says everybody look down
    it's all in your mind

    It's all in my mind
    It's all in my mind

The video's pretty much my tribute to Persona 3 FES, set to a Killers song that struck me as practically an anthem for the game the moment I heard it (the song's really about an alien abductee, but those lyrics are just so perfect for Persona 3!). It tells the game's story in more or less chronological order (with some psychological segues, flashbacks and forwards) and a slight reinterpretation of the ending, in a style that's similar to the game's own directing style. This video took so much artistic energy that there really aren't many details I can write about it without ruining the effect. All I can say is check it out!

If you haven't played Persona 3, the video will make so little sense that it probably won't even spoil anything. In a nutshell, it's about a group of teenage summoners who secretly fight demons at night, but that's a very tiny nutshell! Even without the details, though, hopefully it conveys the mood, and fits the song's own mood, so well that it'll still make an impact. And for people who have played the game, hopefully it'll convey that same mood, except you'll know who all these people are.

    Technical Stuff

The video source material is Persona 3 FES (NA release), processed and saved through PSS Demux, AVISynth and VirtualDubMod as uncompressed .avi's. The deinterlaced video was then edited in Windows Movie Maker 5.1 (which really, really struggled to keep up with it all) with a custom WMV9 profile made with Windows Media Encoder: 640 * 360 square-pixel letterbox format, 29.97 fps, 3.5 MB/s constant bit rate.

The audio source is an uncompressed .wav from the CD, converted to WMA10 Professional, 192kbps, 96 kHz, 2-channel 24 bit constant rate.

Like the Haruhi video, this is probably as technically good as Windows Movie Maker gets (well, within 100mb's, anyway). Unlike the Haruhi video, this one uses a LOT of customized effects, and it's the most complex project I've ever worked on. If I ever want to make a video more visually elaborate than this, it's going to take Adobe, or at least Vegas.

    Hope you like it!
