The vid partly tells the story of how an ordinary Japanese businessman, later given the nickname "Rock", gets kidnapped for ransom by some shady characters, and ends up joining them when his employer literally tells him to go and die (when Revy, the girl, finds out he's worthless for ransom, she doesn't take the news very well). In his subsequent adventures he learns to overcome his fear of death, and to stand up for himself.
The bulk of the vid, however, concentrates on the action scenes that our group of anti-heroes find themselves in, and how they battle and defeat the mercenaries sent to kill them, with an emphasis on the combat skills of Revy "Two-Hands".
This video was a lot of fun to make, and due to the quality of the source material, the version posted on the Org is virtually as good as the 3.5GB master. Forum thread.
Caution: The real action doesn't start until the whistle blows, about 80 seconds into the vid.
Statistical notes:
Video length: 366 seconds
No. of timeline segments: 300+
No. of hours spent on vid: 50+
Seeing the way Revy kicks ass: Priceless
Sync notes: The song is about how awful Hollywood can be, and the singer's wish to go back home to "paradise", which in Axel Rose's case was Indiana. At the start of the vid I make a clearly ironic reference to the seedy place that Rock, the ordinary guy, now calls home, before going into a flashback of how he came to be there. After that the action starts and, though I actually put a lot of thought and effort into trying to sync up some scenes in the barfight to the lyrics of the song, obviously this is all about action-sync, though I tried to get Revy into the scene as often as possible during the "girls are pretty" line.
Lip flap: There is one lip-synch sequence, when the team is debating Rock's extremely inventive idea for taking out the helicopter gunship. The other few instances of lip-flap involve a member of the team giving a quick order, and another member visibly responding. In these situations, removing the lip-flap actually caused disruption and distraction.
Technical notes: None, except to say that the quality of the source material was extraordinary, requiring only the most basic of filters, and no color tweaking necessary. One could tell that it was an OVA and not a typical made-for-TV show.
