End of Video Comments: I'm not going to start off by saying what a fun video this was to make. Truth be told it was a pain in the ass, and I had a rather difficult time finding a suitable export quality that would maintain the quality level of video that I wanted. In the end I came out with this. This was my very first video with Adobe Premiere Pro. I've finally found a program I love, and I'll probably be sticking with this one for a while. I really took a different direction with this video as far as most Advent Children videos go and I also tried to include some major themes. *Spoilers below*
Themes:
1.(Clouds loneliness and rejection of others.) This was something mentioned throughout the movie that Cloud feels extremely lonely after his friends death. I thought it was appropriate to have flashes of his friend in the very beginning of the movie as you've seen. Its a simple overlay track to show Cloud at the grave/sword mixed with images of his friend. The images of his friend are in black and white to represent that it happened in the past. In my opinion it was a great way to start of the video by showing WHY he was lonely through-out, rather than just having clips of him alone. You might not have picked up on that at first but if you watch it again, look at the first clip and really think about why its there.
2.(Darkness.) This was more of a motif throughout the movie rather than a theme, but I feel it deserves some attention or it may go unnoticed. There is virtually no bright or happy scenes in this movie, except for the scene where the cell phone is falling, but those overlays are simply to show that people WANT to help him but he refuses it. ANYWAY, I tried to avoid very bright scenes because I wanted this to have a dark feel. Its supposed to be sad. I even fooled around with the brightness on the scene with Aeris in the field so it had a bit more of a morbid look to it. Its also dark like that because its supposed to show clouds deep and dark mood. Notice when the bullet flys by, it snaps him out of it and the scenes are a bit brighter again. Darkness is also repeated throughout as a touch of foreshadowing to the ending scene.
3.(Broken Dreams of the individual characters.) This is a more minor theme, and really only makes an appearance once earlier on in the video, showing the original destruction of the Shinra powerplant and the children. Cloud turns around upon hearing of these broken dreams, but not wanting to be associated with people, turns and walks out.
IMPORTANT SCENES:
1) Cell phone falling through water- Again, this was just to show Clouds general neglect of the emotions of those around him.
2) The ENDING *spoiler alert*-EASILY the most important scene of this video. Yes Cloud does die in this video. Instead of ending like most AMV's, showing Cloud conquering his problems, being with family, etc, I wanted to show a darker side to what would happen if he DIDN'T conquer his problems and let his misery get the better of him. I really think it would have killed him, which is why this video had to end this way. Its not happy, but its an interesting take on it I think.
As for the other ending where it shows Denzel wake up, its not really supposed to show that the entire thing was a dream, but rather what the world would be like without Cloud. Added greyscale to give it a theatrical feel. If you haven't watched the movie, you might not understand why the last line is so important. Without Cloud, the kids are more likely to be lead astray is basically what I was trying to convey.
Symbols, etc:
1) Dreams-After all this video is called "Broken Dreams" so I tried to focus on dreams of the characters, literally or in the "dreams" like "hopes". (Note that Tifa is asleep when Cloud runs over to her and theres flashes of the fight. I tried to give that a sort of dreamy look.)
2) Kadaj's gang- Used in this video to symbolize his loneliness and perhaps even depression. Notice how he never seems to be beating them in any of the fight scenes...
DOWNLOAD the WMV version unless you LOVE AVI's. WMV is same quality as the AVI, but the file size of the AVI is significantly larger. Both are DVD quality.
